I don't buy from JC Whitney and here's the reason:
About 20 years ago I placed an order with Whitney from their most recent
catalog. I got a note back from them stating that they were in bankruptcy.
They said that they did not have the parts I ordered, but that they would
not be sending my money back. I wrote them a couple more times with no reply
before I wrote my money off........and their company off my list.

Dear webmaster,
Ace Fogdall RV in Cedar Falls, IA has been an Airstream dealer since
1963. We are currently in the process of moving locations and we have a
large storage area with a number of vintage Airstream parts. While we
do not have a complete stock of items, we have a variety of things such
as windows, some hardware, etc. Many of these items are for 1960's
vintage Airstreams. We are hoping to sell these items before we move
and would be grateful if you could spread the word amongst your
visitors, acquaintances, etc. Our prices are reasonable and items are
both new and used. The contact information is listed below--pease ask
for the Parts Department.

well to be totally SARCASTIC!!! - that makes all the sense in the world! today
it is a strong, viable company with a huge inventory and access to all kinds of
stuff you can hardly find elsewhere in one place. Also, if a company is in
bankruptcy, it is perfectly normal for them to wipe their debt.

iow, as long as you are happy, great! but I am darned if I will or would shut
down a source just because of business decisions made by a completely different
management team and so on. no wonder US production-businesses are failing in
this country and our economy is being taken over by the RED Chinese. Now it is
all being outsourced OCONUS.

enuff, that is all I am going to say about this other than to suggest you take
your blinders off and give the company another chance. I will bet that if your
son owned the company, etc ... that you would go back to dealing with it even if
you never got your money back on that deal.

Whitney never was related to me, was never my son either. Once screwed,
twice shy. Bankruptcy laws are used today to wipe out debt - and then they
get to reform under a different mgmt team and go on. However, those of us
who lost our hard earned money get screwed and feel as if we've been robbed.
Gee, why is that? Because we have been robbed. I don't do business with
people like that. If you've never lost money to Whitney you can take your
chances - but when or if you do then you may change your mind.

No second chances, sorry. They never offered to settle with the "little
people" - we don't count on the bottom line. Never have, never will either.

Subject: [VAL] introduce myself

Having joined this trailer thread I will now introduce myself.
My wife and I just bought a 1964 Airstream Trailer that is 24feet, 5 inches from
rear bumper to front of hitch (the bumper appears to be a retrofit from a Ford Pickup),
we have been looking for a Airstream or a Silver Streak for about four years. We live
in North Central Wyoming, in the Big Horn Basin, our children have grown up and left
so we now have time to work on fixing up this trailer. We hope to use it in the mountains
during the spring, summer, and fall. It will be used almost exclusivly away from hook-ups,
sometimes as a base camp for hiking trips into the local wilderness areas. I am a teacher,
my wife is in school to earn her teaching degree, so someday we hope to have large blocks
of the summer to camp, search for wildflowers, hike, moutain climb, fish, or ride horses.
It doesn not have a grey water tank, only a black water. It has a large fresh water tank
but I do not know how large, the water system is all copper, not plastic like our other
campers were.
It has a single axle. It has two furnaces, one with a blower and one without. I think the
one with a blower is a retrofit but do not know for sure. All the small compartment doors are
disabled, where can you get new locks? It doesn't have a table or chairs.
  Joe

Up through the 60s Wally Byam considered gray water to be good for where
ever the camper was and suggested digging a "mole hole" to drain the
gray water. Hence no gray water tank. That's what it says in my '68
owner's manual.

The compartment locks are easy to find. Look for "cam lock" at a good
hardware store, locksmith, or McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com). You'd
like them all keyed alike to minimize the number of keys needed for
access. The two compartment doors on my '68 Caravel are keyed the same.

Tables were sometimes attached with standard RV table hardware to the
front or side wall. You can see how the front dinette is arranged in my
Caravel at http://homepages.isunet.net/geraldj

I just removed a table from a '71 Monitor, but I kept only the table,
not the wall brackets. I might be able to find them but they are
standard RV store items. The table top is a piece of 3/4 particle board
with formica on top and some edging and a standard folding leg. The
bench seats are dimensioned so the table fits down on rails on each
bench seat to fill the gap so the cushions can be rearranged to make a
double bed in place of the dinette. Pretty much standard RV techniques.

Hi Joe,
Welcome to the VAL. I too live in Wyoming and would like to think I may
have even seen your trailer around. We like to count Airstreams when
traveling with the family. Your trailer may be like our Globe Trotter which
has a table that stows in the closet. I'm still not sure if I like the
arrangement but the gaucho couches are sure useful when you have a number of
people huddling inside during a rainstorm. Happy trails.
