Bob,

These postings are a problem for the Airstream List not this list, at least
so far, so lets not get into a discussion on this list.

You'll be just around the corner and over the mountain from the Labor Day
Rally at the Top Of Georgia (Sept 2-5). We don't have all the stuff that
Enota has, but we'll have a hundred or so Airstreams and full hookups at $6
per night. The rally fee is usually about $10-12 per person.

OK. I have had so many of them that I wasn't sure that they were going to
just one list or both of them.

I'm wondering what the vehicles are the most popular ( best) for towing a
24' Argosy (tow weight 5000#)? I've used cars & pick-ups before but have
not towed it in 10 years and most of the new vehicles are not strong
enough to tow. I'm looking for an SUV if possible. I like the Ford
Expedition but heard that it does not pull well in mountainous terrain?
Any suggestions?
Thank you

Hi Don,

I've had excellent results dragging my 1962 24' Trade Wind with two of the
same car: 1970 Olds 98 LS with factory tow packages. Those are long gone
now but, after much extensive research and interviewing owners, I'm keeping my
eye out for a Dodge 2 wheel drive, automatic, factory tow packaged, Cummins
turbo-diesel pickup for my next heavy hauler.

Any input on such a beast would be greatly appreciated...good or bad...I
haven't bought one yet.

Thanks,

Mark in Modesto

Don,

The best tow vehicle is a DodgeFordGMCChevrolet, longshort wheelbase,
regularcrew cab, longshort bed, gasdiesel pickup or a
DodgeFordGMCChevrolet suv.

Seriously, what kind of vehicle do you want? A pickup has utility value
other than towing, you are asked to help friends move and tote stuff for
them. An SUV will carry more people in comfort, but does not have the
bulk carrying capacity. An older car has character, but not everyone
wants to deal with the higher maintenance requirements.

I have not located a new car with a tow rating of more than 3500 lbs,
therefore a new car is out of the question. For 5000 lbs, you probably
need a car built before 1980, although I have been told that some GM
cars in the 80's have 5000 lbs tow ratings.

Subject: [VAL] Cargo Shifting: Dometic water tray.

    All,

Please take an extra moment to read the entire content of this offering
before emailing me back. That way I won't have to answer any obvious
questions later.

Today I have a Dometic water tray that I'm offering up to someone who
needs one. It fits under the freezer compartment fins at the back of the
upper wire storage rack in the main part of the 'fridge.

The Aquamarine blue one in my original Dometic in my 1969 Caravel is
slightly different but close enough to the one I'm offering that I think
they're the same thing just slightly different models.

This intact and not stained, OPAQUE WHITE one that I'm offering differs
in the following way from mine. It has molded-in spring keepers, one at
each end (part of the one piece plastic tray) that are, in bellybutton
parlance, "outies", whereas mine has "innies". So look in your Dometic
'fridge where your missing or cracked one is to see if there are little
depressions in the side wall that will accept this tray. If not, this one
ain't for you. Because of the reverse configuration of the keepers, it's
too wide for use in my Dometic. You get the idea.

It's absolute, largest, outside overall measurements including the
"outies" are as follows: 17 3/4" long, 3 7/16" wide and 2 15/16 high.

The tray has three, 2 15/16" wide, 3/4" high dividers or baffles in it
that are at 5 1/4" intervals, presumably there to keep melted ice from
sloshing around inside the box when under way. The only identification is
on the bottom of the tray that reads, MO 1/2.

I don't know for sure but I suspect that these trays are not readily
available if at all anymore so this might be quite a score for someone who
could use it badly.

So if you really need this tray for your own personal use and don't want
it just to resell for profit to someone else, you can have it if you're the
first to respond and you agree to cover the postage.

I won't ask for any payment up front because I want you to be 100% happy
with it first before you cover the cost of the postage. To do that, when it
arrives at your door and is in good shape, look to see what the postage is
on the box I'll have safely packed it in and send that amount only to my
return address that will also be clearly marked there too.

    Good luck,

Good to hear from you Cindy,
The polarity light is indeed the one on top of the breaker box. When lit, it
signifies that the polarity to the trailer is reversed. A trailer of your
vintage (and mine) had only a two prong electrical connection long before
one of the tabs was slightly taller than the other. It was possible to hook
it up incorrectly and the polarity light would tell you to plug it in the
other way.

Subject: RE: [VAL] best tow vehicle

Greetings Don!

I can't help with the Ford side as I have never towed with anything
other than GM or Chrysler products. While the new GMC Evoy/Chevrolet
Trailblazer can tow up to 7,000 pounds when properly equipped, if much
travel is planned in mountainous terrain I would "give the nod" to the
Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon 1500 series with the 5300 VORTEC as a minimum
tow vehicle for your 5,000 pound gorss weight Argosy 24. If you are
accustomed to towing with the old 455/454/500 cubic inch GM powered
vehicles or the 460 cubic inch Ford/Mercury/Lincoln powered vehicles,
you might want to consider the 3/4-ton (2500 series) so that you an opt
for the larger displacement 8100 VORTEC.

Based on my experience with the '99 GMC Suburban 2500, it is far more
than I need when towing the Minuet (3,100 pounds) - - while it is the
least tow vehicle that I would want whent considering the power to
handle mountainous terrain when towing the Overlander (6,100 pounds).
The Suburban is a vehicle that I special ordered new from the dealer
with the 10,000 pound heavy duty trailer tow package, and 131,000 miles
later I am still absolutely thrilled with how it handles the chores that
I ask it to perform. (I wouldn't recommend the four-wheel-drive as it
is the only system that has caused me any trouble in the time that I
have had the vehicle - - so far, it is on its eighth electronic control
board for the transfer case.)

Good luck with your research and tow vehicle selection!

Hi Bobby,
I looked up their site and it looks like a great place to camp. What
are the camping fees? I didn't see any on the site. By the way I have
just about finished the Overlander. Thanks for the help with the
aluminum. Maybe Glenda and I can make it that weekend and see you guys!
You can view our Airstream on the site Tom set up for us.
By the way Tom does a teriffic job helping out folks like myself that
