Jack,

Is this a serious question or a joke? After all I said here about being a
very good citizen you ask me if we pick up after our animals? I'm not even
sure that this question deserves an answer -- it should be a no-brainer.

To answer you: Yes, of course we do! We've even got "dedicated tools" to
do just that -- pick it up, all of it.

I don't know whether or not to take you seriously, Jack. Was this an
attempt at humor that I missed? Or, have all the pet owners you've run into
left a bad taste in your mouth? Inquiring minds you know.

Tom

Hello,
This is a sore subject in the WBCCI and all dog owners should be aware
that the WBCCI is looking hard at this issue. As a dog owner X 2 (and a
cat) I know how important it is to keep your dogs under control, closely
watched and cleaned up after. I have run into a number of Dog Owners
that make the rest of our lives miserable because they don't take care
of the noise or mess. If you have a barker, either leave them at home
or train them not to. If you don't clean up after them, I have been
known to clean up for you and leave it on your step for the next
morning, (better you than me stepping in it in my bare feet, and I
don't even light the bag on fire!). Also I don't like to be segregated
at rallies because of my dogs and this will stop if we dog owners do our
part.

I purchased the Airstream so I could travel in comfort with my dogs and
kids, the club is a nice perk. I have had my own battles with the WBCCI
over this topic in the past and don't need other poor pet owners setting
my progress back.

Train your animals, be diligent in you management of their activities
and we won't have WBCCI or campground problems. Don't..................
and we'll talk (or I'll leave you a nice present!)

Tom-

I think you need to lighten up, or be prepared for more confusion... I kinda
'knew' you picked up after your animals- from your dissertation on how
concerned you are about keeping them quiet, (and noting how considerate you
are) in doing so. If you are that concerned about what comes out of the
front end of a dog, -you're probably concerned about what comes out of the
other end too.

Trouble is, it's been my observation that the folks who crow the most about
(anything)- are the ones who only do it for the edification of those who
notice, -like the people who 'pickup' after their animal -only- when they
think someone is watching... and -I'm not talking about you here, but you've
seen them.

That much concern for campground neighbors' rights to a quiet
campground -makes a suppressive atmosphere for the animals. Far better to do
'remote' camping and let the animals have some freedom too, than to suppress
them with rules and sensibilities they don't understand.

Sure, I was needling you... not because you have animals, but because I saw
you patting yourself on the back and putting less considerate people (in
your opinion) -down at the same time; -I have more of a problem with
judgmental people than I do with a dog's barking or his poops, and here I am
being -judgmental.

We have two dogs and two cats that "always, always" -go with us where we
go... (which can be -interesting-), and we make the effort to respect
non-pet owner's sensibilities... but I don't see the need to post it or call
anyone's attention to it... and none of this has anything to do with
Airstreams, vintage or otherwise -anyway. Nuf' Sed.

Ed, I agree with you completely- it's a sore point with me too, that I get
discriminated against for having pets... -because of the actions or
in-actions of other pet owners... (We have 2 & 2 that travel with us) My
answer to Tom's last post and my agreement with your frustrations should
make that clear...

But if you -ever- feel inclined to put someone else's calling card on -my-
step, I'll be happy to explain it to you that you got the -wrong- step. You
might not be happy with the explanation, so you better be sure of what
you're doing.

As a former dog owner..(currently without) ...assuming all other things
being fairly equal, we ask for a slot in the pet section...

We have found that pet owners are usually more tolerant, easier to be
around and just generally a bit better grade of folks... ( not intended to
put down those that chose to not have pets, just to thank the ones that do...)

Peace all... see you in the pet section...

To All. my wife and I are not totally satisfied with the portable AC
unit we use in the 57 Overlander (trying to get trailer pics up with
Tom's help). Therefore, she gave me the green light for roof AC unit. My
question: is the roof of this year and model stable enough to handle a
AC unit. When I installed the Fantastic fan I found a 110 elect.lin run
to the 14 X14" opening. This is the rear roof vent. Also there is an
original vent fan for the rear bath that sits very close to the vent
opening. What brand and where is the best prices? Should I have John
Bleakly who is nearby with a price estimate of $800 + labor do it as i
have a history of back problems as well as being over the hill :(. Any
help is appreciated.

I recently had two Coleman Power Saver a/c units installed in my Streamline
Travel Home. The work so well (i.e., freeze you out) that I just yesterday
elected to have the same unit installed in my Streamline trailer. Price to
me here in Houston is $599 plus about $100 labor. I see the same unit on
the internet at $618.80
(http://www.camperswarehouse.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=4697&M
MP=1).

My reason for installing the motorhome was the low current draw (10.2 amps),
which meant that I could easily run both units at the same time off my
original Onan. The cooling proved to be much better than I had expected,
but then, the units being replaced were almost 40 years old.

Joy, I would also suggest looking at the Yamaha inverters:
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/products/gen/ef2800i.html

I especially like the EF2800i, light weigh (64 lbs), quiet (60-67 dba), and
fits in the back of a pickup with cover-16.7" high. I plan to buy one for
fitting under the cover on my F-250 SD. Then lift the cover and tailgate to
fire up, plug in the a/s power cord. It should fire your ac and charge the
battery.

My Yamaha is VERY noisey and doesn't run very smoothly. If I needed a
generator more often, I would sell it cheap and buy two Honda 2000i's. On a
recent trip, in a rest stop, I noticed that my Yamaha 2800 was louder than
the 18 wheeler parked next to me. 67 dba is ALOT different than the 58 or so
dba of the Hondas.

I see the intended use for A/C while "boon-docking" seems to be more
oriented to keeping the dogs cool while shopping. A few years ago I visited
a campground on the Cascades Highway here in Washington state (highway just
blocked due to landslide, if any of you are planning to tour it). What
should have been a lovely, quiet, camp in the woods was spoiled by a
generator running behind an old VW Van camper! A/C does not belong in these
areas.

I think you misunderstand the issue from my standpoint, Huff.

Seems you've combined a new idea for *camping* -- hit the woods and then hit
the stores! ;) I doubt that would really be a possibility for most because
if they are that near the "shoppes" they can't be too far into the woods.

Have you ever traveled with lots of creature comforts or do you prefer to
camp on the ground with a thick foam pad under your sleeping bag and the
stars? Do you go *camping* to get away from it all? Or, do you go just to
get away and change the usual scenery?

I would suspect that if you own an Airstream trailer and I do not know if
you do or not or if you own an SOB for that matter, you got a "luxury"
camping vehicle or trailer so that you could continue to enjoy your
lifestyle. True? Or, not?

Why were those people (can't be dogs running the campsite so there had to be
*people* with that VW) using a generator? Did they have a real need? Or,
do you think they just didn't care about who heard their "noise" in the
surrounding 5 miles near their chosen campsite?

Another question: Were those people with their noisy generator and old VW
there before you? Did they get their site before you even got there?
Maybe, just maybe, they had long term reservations for exactly where they
were camped. Do you think any of this is at all possible?

Camping is a social thing for most of us who enjoy the outdoors and good
company. But, camping can also be a very solitary thing to do when the
world bothers you. Me? I prefer social when I feel like it and solitary
when I feel like it. I know there will be things I have to put up with
anywhere in the world but I don't let it bother me, if it's that bad I
change the scenery.

All of us have been victims of what I like to call "the good time gang" --
they usually arrive late at night and make lots of noise while they set up
their site not caring about those that had just fallen asleep in a quiet
park with the scent of pine in the air. When morning comes and it looks
like it would be a rotten weekend if we didn't move ourselves to another
area, we move unless we see the "good time gang" packing their stuff so they
can get on down their road.

Do you have any electrical things in your trailer (if you even have an RV,
that is) that require 120 vdc? If you have an air conditioner I would find
it difficult to believe that you'd never use it if you are within 5 miles of
another camper because you thought if you did you'd offend them.

We have to share space with our fellow citizens and good citizens make for
good neighbors and friendships that are hard to find nowadays. Wouldn't you
agree?

I'm with you Jim, there are lots of reasons that an oldster like me and my
spouse need AC. I'll be as quiet as possible and use my shootin' ear
deafeners to make it quiet if necessary. What generator? This weekend I'm
camping right in the middle of the first Virginia State Cowboy Action
Championship, Roanoke, VA. :)

Still working on getting my new axle installed. But, there's too many irons
in the fire and my shootin' takes up too much time.

    Tom, Charlie and Judy,

Thanks to you all for your help. Tom for the great images of your
curtain installations, including each style of slider used. Charlie for the
link to Inland RV for the sliders and to Judy for the same at Camping World.

I now what to look for and am developing a plan.

On another note, I went to a fabric store today and selected a very
sturdy yet attractive green fabric for the five cushions I need to have
recovered. I'll check in with a local upholsterer tomorrow to get the
yardage figures and then back to the fabric store to buy it.

Judy, while there I'll ask about the sliders from them. Then on to
selecting the fabric and having them made.

Does anyone have any thoughts about using heavy cotton for the sun
shield/liner? The type I'm referring to is cotton and almost looks like
painters canvas.

    Thanks again to you all,

Jim,
While I agree with you in theory, I do believe that we all need to keep the
surrounding environment in mind when we utilize properties. We should
respect others and not radically change the environment they expect to find.
I can tell you that I was very upset one night in the mountains of Utah when
a motor home pulled within 10' of my camper with his generator running after
10:00! We were the only two campers in a very large open area ( over 1/4
mile) and he had room to move several hundred feet away and not impact me or
impair his access. He did move the next morning which made me very happy.
Yes he had a right to be there and do what he pleased, but I thought he was
very inconsiderate of me.

Conversely, I was hunting in New Mexico 15 miles from any major road and
found that my only source of power was a generator that was much louder than
expected. Coupled with a rental trailer with a poor battery meant that we
had to run the gen every day to keep the battery good for a couple of hours.
We ended up returning to camp mid-day to run the gen for an hour to give us
enough power to make it through dinner. Only had a couple of rigs within
500 feet, but didn't want to interfere with their peaceful evenings.

Its not an issue of ACs, rather an issue of respect for others.

BTW, I've since purchased a Eu2000i so noise really isn't an issue while
boon docking. I plan to get a second one so I can run my AC where ever I
want and still be courteous to any real or potential neighbors.

If I may be so bold as to add to this discussion. I own a generator and run it while
boondocking in the fall and winter. I use it to keep the battery up so the furnace and
lights work, I only run one tank and then figure it time to shut out the lights and go
to bed. I have never run it while camping in a camping area, only while boondocking in
the mountains. I do not consiter it any more displeasing than the thousands of campers
who get to the mountains and build a large useless fire.

Pete, thank you, that was very nicely expressed. I too think this is an
issue of respect and consideration for others, not what we have the
right to subject others around us to.

I recently bought the Honda EU3000IS specifically because it was rated
at the lowest decible level I could find, even though equivalent-sized
generators can be had for half the price or less. (Note to list: no
intention to be patting self on back here! :) ) This past July in
sweltering heat in western Ontario, I ran it about 1 1/2 hours per day,
broken up to about 20 minutes at a time, and when we were leaving after
5 days, our neighbor camper came over to chat and complimented me on the
quiet generator. He wanted to know the model so he could check into one
for himself.

I do think it is a false dichotomy to say "I *have* to have A/C, a
generator, etc etc. because..(insert your own special case here)." We
all make choices; having pets is a choice, camping/trailering is a
choice, travelling in a warm climate is a choice. Nobody *has* to do any
of these things; they are choices made for our pleasure and
convenience. Seems to me we all can have respect and consideration for
other people's legitimate concerns around us as we exercise those
personal choices.
