As I recall, you posted a picture for all to see on Airstream Forums
awhile back, either that or there's another Marl\k in Modesto with a
gold paneled trailer :)

It's free to post & view photos on AirstreamForums...if you want to

Jim,

I was able to locate rather easily led lights that had been built to use in
the old 12 receptacles that are already in the light fixtures of the stream.
I bought one for every light and replace just the one that comes on first so
I would have a low draw option for the existing fixtures in the trailer, but
would still have the brightness of the original fixture when I selected the
other two settings of the 4 way switch. It works great. I think I used the
ones that have 9 leds in them as they were still not too large to fit in all
the fixtures. As I recall I found them on ebay.

Hope this helps

Has anyone here built LED light assemblies for their Airstream or seen any
good references on making these. I did a web search but didn't find any
good information. I'm interested in lights with less current draw and thus
a longer battery life.

Hello All,
First I would like to thank all of you the offered a solution to my
water tank venting problem. What I did to remedy the problem of the tank
not taking water is to add an opening in the top of the tank and a
drain/vent through the belly pan. I have an ABS tank with pre tapped
openings, I drilled out the one in the top-side corner, threaded an
elbow that came with the tank, drilled a hole through the floor and
belly pan and ran a piece of plastic tubing from the elbow and through
the floor and belly pan. When I filled it today it worked fine! I now
have a complete fresh water system. Just as a FYI I used copper from the
street water supply throughout the trailer and used plastic tubing from
the holding tank to the pump and back into the copper. I had to work out
the connections from the tank, pump and to the copper but nothing a
number of hose clamps can't fix ( and a good Hardware store!)

On to installing the shower wall.

I see them listed in some RV catalogs too.

I sent email to Reese and to a hitch company to ask what torque to
use on my Suburban hitch platform, back in 1999. One replied 75 ft-lb, and
the other (I think Reese) 80 ft-lbs. It was an OEM platform, which is why
I asked two places; maybe Reese has revised their specs since then.

Hi Shari,

I checked the phone book...I'm the only Mark Spencer in Modesto, so it had to
be me. Your recall glands are functioning normally. In real life, I DID post
a shot of my old 'Stream a year or two ago, with the same motive of learning
more about the thing and it's gold stripe.

I haven't learned a lot more about it, but it seems to have generated a lot of
buzz about Trade Winds, and that's always fun too. Not to mention a few folks
who've contacted me offlist with 'kindred spirit' messages. They're right,
and I now know there are more oddballs on this list than I'da thought! (They
know what I mean isn't mean)

Thanks for your note, Shari...I'll see if I can find Airstream Forums, and
where on that site to post pictures for now and future stuff.

Best regards,

Mark in Modesto

ps. I just clicked on the link you sent...talk about deja vu! It WAS two
years ago, and I noticed the description I posted was darn near exactly the
same as the one I posted to THIS list a few days ago! It was almost eerie...

I see now where I got the notion that Wally Byam himself 'might have been' the
original owner on a trip through Africa (Marc's note), but now that I know
more, it was very likely the ALL gold one, which is on display at the
Airstream factory. I would have been nice though...

As with shock absorber replacement, this is a good application for an
air impact wrench if you have sufficient air pressure to achieve the
necessary torque. My air impact wrench is among my most treasured
weapons just for the reason you describe, Gerald.

Gerald:
I just looked at the Reese site, and found a set of instructions
for a Suburban class IV hitch platform. They say to tighten 1/2" nutss
(3/4" socket) to 75 ft-lb if they have a lock washer; to 90 ft-lb if they
are lock nuts. That's all I can find from Reese; I did not look for
pickups or heavy-duty pickups, or class V platforms..
If your 3/4" bolts are the actual bolt diameter, then I imagine
the 110 ft-lb that you remember is the correct value to use. That would
require heavy exertion, probably using legs, at least for me. My hitch
nuts are fitted with a 3/4" socket; so I presume they are for 1/2" bolts.
The whole point here is that everyone should try to find out (from
dealer, instructions, Reese, whatever) what the correct torque value is,
and check it out before every extended trip; at least annually as a
minimum. I typically find one or two of the six nuts will turn a bit
before the torque wrench clicks; so, loose bolts on a receiver is not just
a scare tactic - it's real.

I pulled the installation guide on my Drawtite/Reese Dual-Port class 4
receiver and the 9/16" bolts require 110ft lbs, while the 1/2" bolts require
106ft lbs. Depending on the receiver and vehicle, the specs will vary, BUT
the important thing is to KNOW the correct torque and check ALL the nuts
periodically. Earlier this afternoon, I pulled out the trusty torque wrench
and check and one of the nuts needed just a bit of rotation to pull to the
110ft lb mark. All the others were still on the money.

Steve,
If you are going to go with a conversion, you might consider staying
hydraulic but going to disc brakes. Airstream has just announced that they
will offer new Airstreams as well as a dealer retrofit kit to install Kodiak
Disc Brakes along with the necessary electric to hydraulic actuator and
controller. You can expect about $1200-$1500 for a single axle with each
additional axle adding a few hundred additional. I did the investigation on
this idea about a year ago and turned Dickie Regel onto what I had found
when I was at the factory back in Oct. Looks like they followed up. Not
sure whose electric to hydraulic actuator Airstream is going to use, but I
was very impressed with MasterBrake's ElecDraulic unit which works with
their excellent BrakeSmart controller. Although I have yet to convert our
Bambi from electric to hydraulic disc, it is on my list.

And to those who like to work with their heads and their hands:

LED's are cheap and easy to work with. Radio Shack carries them in several
different colors, and they can be found 'out there' a whole lot cheaper in
bulk (sorry, no links).

Almost any light fixture could be converted to utilize a home-made string of
LEDs, if one likes to solder and operate a screwdriver.

Some LED's put out two colors. One could have white for general lighting and
red for nighttime coach navigation to the relief station (though such a
fixture would require another switch in the circuit to swap colors).

Just a thought...

Judy, I have no idea why, but my step just started staying up, except on
REALLY bad bumps. I think maybe I sprayed some siliconde under there.
Doesnt make much sense but something worked. It stayed up for 2 months
on the road this summer except for one RR track bump.

Someone wrote that they riveted a canvas strap with a snap to the
underside and used that to hold it up.

For LED sources try www.mouser.com or www.digi-key.com. Their stock
will be ten years newer than Radio Shack's and in a field where the light
output seems to double or triple each year that is very significant.

I've bought some fairly high output white LEDs from Hosfelt in Ohio, but I
quit doing business with them over the cost of shipping an order with
three LEDs which they tossed in a catalog as ballast letting me pay for
the shipping. Some in the mouser catalog show three times the light out
of those I bought from Hosfelt last year. One of the LEDs from Hosfelt
had about the same light output, but over a bit smaller area as my
three D cell flashlight according to my light meter.

I've been using a LED flashlight for a couple years now that I picked up
at the local Walmart (sporting goods department) that runs on two AA
cells. I don't know yet for how long.

Right now red LEDs produce the most light per milliamp, yellow and
green next, then white last, kind of like a chronology of their ages with
red having been around by far the longest. I'm seeing many green LED
traffic lights now, distinctive by their dots instead of a continuous green
lens.

Subject: RE: [VAL] Hitch problems

One way to be sure the hitch stays attached without periodic
retightening would be to put a bit of loctite on the bolt threads before
tightening. If its a hard grade they might have to be cut off if the hitch
had to be removed. And checking the torque annually would break the
loctite otherwise and make it of far less benefit, the loctited parts would
be better off not checked with a torque wrench.

I don't have a torque wrench big enough to check them anyway.

Its possible that some of the looseness comes from frame channels
being crushed by hard knocks, not by the nuts backing off.

On my Reese hitch with provision for load equalizing springs, there's no
room for a large socket or an impact wrench. Only an open end or box
end wrench can get to the nut for the ball. For my farm tractor shop I
do have a dandy 3/4" drive impact wrench but its too big to go
between the hitch and the ground with the hitch in the receiver, but still
there's pieces of hitch in the way so it won't help any. I have two smaller
air impact wrenches and an air ratchet too, plus a die grinder that is
really handy for removing rusted in place hardware.

You can see the tab just to the left of center, it has a 90 deg. bend at
the bottom:

The 5 wheels, tires, and hubcaps plus mounting, balancing, taxes, and
installation came to $1167.53. This price was agreed to in Spring, 2003. I
expect costs and prices have gone up since then. It took a long time for
the wheels and hubcaps to come in.

(I don't have time to read this site's posting every day.)

P. S.: My intention has been to provide a version of the write-up for
inclusion in The Vintage Advantage and Blue Beret, if their editor's see fit
(after I get my VAC membership straightened out). That way people could see
it as formatted in Word, rather than the corrupted format as it appeared
here.
