Thanks, Bob. I've got to look into something that is cost effective for
what I receive and the cable TV rates have gone through the roof since we've
gotten it many years ago.

I wonder how much more it would cost to have both my TV and Internet needs
met via satellite which is portable, too.

Dan,
I've run into the same problem with my Vintage Airstreams as well. I bought
an aluminum "tread plate" tool box (didn't install the handle) from Lowe's
for $40 and used it as a portable step. It is strong enough to step on and
is handy for tools and spare trailer hardware at the same time.

I've been ordering movies online for about a year!
You COULD order them in advance of a trip and depending on the BOX you have
You can be notified of the event incase you forget about it! (of course the TV
needs to be running)

    Dan,

My 1969 Caravel step appears to have two 3/4" square holes at either end
of the front of the step that for all the world appear to be for an
accessory added step.

My guess is that it would have looked just like the swinging one but
would be removable. I imagine it with a vertical plate on both ends, to
which two 3/4" boxed tubes are welded horizontally. These two horizontal
pieces might then be slid into the two 3/4" holes.

I just went out back and checked the underside of the step and behind
the 3/4" holes. It appears to be free of anything that would prevent an
accessory step from being slid into place.

Am I anywhere near getting this right? Are these added steps still
available new/used? Does anyone have a photo of what they should look like?
I've thought about making my own if I could get my hands on an image and
some measurements.

I know this isn't what you asked about but thought I'd share my thoughts
on the same subject.

My 85-year old mother in law recently declined to look around inside our
Caravel because of that missing step.

Glyn,
You are exactly right. I met a guy at the International last year with this
optional step. I took pictures of it and would be glad to send you or anyone
else a copy.
It was on a 67 Safari so I guess it might fit a 69 as well. I was going to
make one but found the tool box idea and went with that.

Greetings Colin and Glyn!

An alternative to the built-in step system offered on Airstreams was a
separate portable step that was used in the Argosy Minuet series. As a
stroke of luck, I purchased my Minuet from the original owner and he
included the portable step with the coach. It is made of heavy aluminum
with a non-slip Argosy orange vinyl insert on the top. You can see a
photo of this step at:

http://www.airstreamphotos.com/photos/data/500/827entry_step_side_view.j

I have found that I actually like it better than the built-in step on my
Overlander. It is assembled with rivets so it may be something that
could be reproduced by someone with a few metalworking tools.

I have this optional step on my Safari.

There is a spot under the trailer just forward of the door that holds the
extra step.

There are two holes where the two square tubes slide in and a bolt with a
wing nut to hold it on.

When you remove it the sides fold open on hinges and it slides into the
square openings on the step.

We only used it once so far. My built in step isn't that sturdy so I don't
really like use the extra one.

Chaplin,
Did you get the handle to operate the jack manually? It fits in the top of
the electric jack and gives you a great ratio to allow most anyone to raise
and lower the jack. I don't recall the gear ratio but I could easily
operate my jack with one hand. Not the best solution, but should help until
you get a replacement. Check the usual suppliers to find a new one.
Camping world has them on sale from time to time and the following site has
one on sale for $179 right now.
https://www.rvpartsoutlet.com/newstore/nojava/ I found one in JC Whitney a
couple of years ago on sale for $149. I have no financial or other interest
in any of these recommendations.
Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I did not get the handle and even if I did the cover
will not come off since the allen screws were stripped out. That jack will
hopefully be returned.

Anyone ever tried or heard of this product for coating your Airstream before?
Says it's flexible and coating gets rock hard.

I bought one of these for our Airstream. I also use it to get into the
engine compartment of our Excursion.

Glyn,

Actually I believe that the 'extra' step flips over the second lowest step
if it's not needed. I have found that the step is more firm if you don't
actually use all the steps -- but I understand the need some would have for
it.

If you can measure the thickness and width along with the length that would
fit on top of the lower step in your case, then add some curved swing arms
and some bushings you might be in business. ;) You'd also need those
carriage bolts and nuts for those square holes.

Don't know about Airstreams, but a number of restorers on the PowerWagon
Forum
(http://www.dodgepowerwagon.com/) have used it in the restoration of
their trucks.

Subject: [VAL] Cyclo polisher

Has anyone used the Cyclo polisher on a surface that had some fairly deep
scuffing on it? My 27' Overlander had been painted, and after stripping, I
find that the paint covered some areas where someone had apparently used a
sander to remove something.

I wonder if the Cyclo would remove/polish those scuffed areas. Naturally, if
so, the entire rig would have to be polished.
