Hey all. I just ran across something - If you find an
old airstream that is a complete bodywork shambles,
but the person is practically giving it away, here's
the ticket:

(sorry, had to create a scenario there)

you hammer out the dents and dings, do standard
automotive body work on it, and paint it with this:

http://www.alsacorp.com/products/mirrachrome/mirra_show.htm

also an option for argosys that are tired of being
white!

the same company has a "mood ring" type paint that
changes colors when hit with light, or heat too!

http://www.alsacorp.com/products/xposurepaint/xposurepaint_show.htm

Just wanted to show you all. I'm always on the
lookout for cool things.

I have not seen the trailer - I am only going by the number he gave me -
but I think the 26' sounds correct. He lives in the mountains above town
and the trailer is not visible from the highway - I didn't know it was
there until he called me. I plan to go and see it when I get a chance (I
am working again after being retired for a few years).

Hi Toby,

Check the pricing though... At $1,200 a gallon it might be less expensive
to buy all new aluminum.

Ken,

Just curious... Are you putting the wood over the existing aluminum
interior skins or replacing the aluminum completely? It seems there might
be advantages to both methods. Losing the original skins would shed the
weight. Keeping them in place would allow for more places to screw or
rivet wood panels. The aluminum panels could also aid in water damage
prevention if there were leaks in the exterior skin. I'm not sure if
there's a right or wrong way to approach this. I'm just wondering what has
worked for you. Are you doing the entire inside, including the ceiling and
endcaps?

Thanks,
Wally

Not sure the interior skin will help with leaks though, to me all it will
do is rearrange where the water ends up and make it more difficult to find
the leak - its important to track down those leaks - although I think if
you can find and successfully fix all the leaks, you can probably solve
world peace :)

Ken,

True, the interior skin won't help stop leaks. I was only suggesting
that it might prevent damage to the wood by, as you said, re-routing the
water somewhere else.

I'm in the process of removing all the interior skins from my Caravel. It's
very interesting to see where the water has been. What's more interesting
(and frustrating) is seeing where the mice have been. Some areas look
absolutely brand new while others have been completely ravaged by the
rodents. It there's an opening , they'll find it.

Good luck on your project. I would love to see some pictures.

Wally

Have the mice gotten into the walls? Usually they get into the belly. I
just pulled out a very old and very dried up mouse out of belly of my 58 -
must have been a brother to the one I pulled out of my 59 (since sold)
Traveler - they both looked just alike, probably 40 years old.

So now that I've seen the same mouse in two trailers with no other evidence
of mice - does that tell me that if a mouse dies and shrivells up under
your trailer, does that tell any other mice "look what happened to me" :)
- - and so you don't get any more? Wondering if I should put this one back -
hee hee.

Anyway, if I remember to take your e-mail address home with me tonight,
I'll e-mail you a couple cabinet pic's

Ken,

My experience so far (2 vintage Airstreams) is that once they get in the
belly, they have the run of the place. There are plenty of large holes cut
in the floor for drain pipes that allow them easy access to the inside of
the trailer. What I couldn't figure out with my Caravel was how the mice
we able to make a nest behind the fiberglass insert for the overhead cabinet
over the front window. Once I tore it all apart, the answer was obvious.
The water filler pipe enters the front of the trailer under the sofa. The
round pipe comes through a rectangular hole in the interior skin. Of course
the tank and filler pipe provides a nice easy entry for them into the wall.
Once inside, they chewed their way up the wall and into the open cavity
behind the cabinet insert. Because the fiberglass insert for this cabinet
is not a perfect fit (gaps at the corners) they had an easy way inside the
overhead cabinet. Of course, that meant they could exit the other side and
head down the inside of the wall on the other side of the trailer, all the
while leaving a disgusting mess behind them.

When I'm done, I'll be rodent-free. The trick will be keeping it that way.

Minwax Polyshades "Olde Maple" over birch is what I am using right now
in my cabinet refinishing. It is available in either satin or gloss. It
is a stain and polyurethane mix, and I am extremely pleased with the
result.

Like some others, I have used Watco finishes and been not fully satisfied.

Good luck--would like to see pictures of the finished product.
