Tom,

Thank you for your nice comments. The American Truck Historical Society
has an annual convention, this year it was a the California Speedway in
Fontana, CA. Their web site is aths.org and they have chapters all over
the US and events by each chapter. I see from your email address that
you are in one of the Carolinas, I am sure that there will be some event
near you.

The Excursion with the Powerstroke is a very good tow vehicle although I
am partial to the Dodge with the Cummins.

Airstream Content: In addition to the vintage trucks, over 25 years,
there was a vintage trailer section in the camping area. In addition to
Craig Dorsey's trailer, Vintage-Vacations.com, and a few other vintage
trailers, there were three Airstreams from the 70's, my 1979 Safari
being the newest. In the camping area, in addition to about 40 GMC
motorhomes there was a three axle GMC General with a Sovereign on the
bed converted to a camper. I have two pictures if anyone is interested
I will send them off list.

Anyone know the street address for the Mega Mall in Lansing where the
vintage group is meeting on the 25th? I want to plug it into my GPS
Road Mate and I need an actual address. I'm leaving Long Island on the
24th and spending that night at the Penn Wood Airstream Park. Anyone
heading that direction that I could meet up with?

And, any clue what amp. service we get? Can I use a toaster? I need my
english muffin in the AM with coffee to get me going! I have a gizzmo
that I found in the trailer when I bought it that sits on the stove
burner and you lay the toast on top. Really cute.

So when you have a flat, you are going to call and wait for a tow truck?

While a thread gauge is nice to have, the assortments of nuts at the
hardware and auto parts stores work quite well to determine a thread
size.

Aluminum wheels tend to take special nuts and bolts, not the tapered
surfaces of the steel wheels, but a shoulder that doesn't lock quite as
well. That's why they need to be retightened after a few miles of
running after each time they are off.

I do vaguely remember my VW had lug bolts, but they were metric,
wouldn't fit AS aluminum wheels or hubs.

Trailer and farm implement hubs can come with studs or threaded holes,
just takes a little difference in machining at the factory. Both have
benefits. The machining for studs is less expensive but the studs have
to be bought and pressed in. And studs give bit better wheel alignment
while the wheel is being installed. Threaded holes for lug bolts take a
bit more machining (threading the drilled holes), but don't hold the
wheel up before a lug bolt is in place. Often I find its a hassle to
hold the wheel up on the center hole piece and turn the wheel and the
hub independently to get a bolt into a hole. Much more of a hassle when
the tire is a meter tall and a foot wide like my big tractor's front. A
damaged thread in a hub for lug bolts requires messy repair or
replacement while a damaged thread on a stud can be replaced. Just takes
the hub off the axle and a hydraulic press. Auto parts stores tend to
stock a good assortment of the studs ready for pressing in. And
sometimes they have the press to do that task. The studs are often
harder than the hubs so they wear slower with many wheel changes than
the threaded holes in the cast hubs for lug bolts.

Its hard to say which is better, certainly the trailer, farm equipment,
and auto industry hasn't been consistent with one or the other. Wheels
are a bit easier to align with studs, but the assembly has fewer parts
when there's lug bolts, and the wheels don't care except for custom
aluminum wheels.

I found a couple years ago that replacing a broken stud on my Caravel
wasn't as simple as on a farm wagon. I had to cut rivets and remove the
brake's disk for the magnet before pushing the stud out. Had I done that
first I'd had saved having to get the drum bent back in alignment with
the hub.

Oh I am stung ! No, all the right tools will be in the truck before I
take off. Although it's tempting.....

Airstream sent the lugbolts over night delivery and the wheels are now
on the trailer !

The guys didn't like the bolts, they wanted a more extended bolt so they
could get a better grip on them with the socket. But they are on and I
drove around for a while and they're still on and tight.

I will have to go get a thin walled socket to match and probably a
proper breaker bar.

The wheels look TERRIFIC !!!. What a difference from the dirty black
ones with no hubcaps !

Now, about the cup in the center. I wonder why they didn't send me those
too.. didnt ask I guess. So I polished up the hub covers. They look like
they were chromed once upon a time. Should I get new ones?

Wait til you see!

From Airstream. Well, from a dealer, you have to use a dealer.

I haven't checked to see if they match the ones in my 1973 brochure.
Anyway, they look maaaavelous !

Be sure you get the right lug nuts or bolts to go with them if you do...

Patty,

They advertise providing only 3 amps of electric per trailer. so
unfortunately no toaster. Some people can get away with the coffee maker and
we have always been able to use a vaccume (which uses more than 3 amps), but
I would carry some instant coffee just in case.

My wife and I are currently planning on leaving Cleveland (I-80) Friday
morning the 25th, 8 or 9 in the morning. Penn Wood is 2 hours east of us. If
you are interested in caravanning let me know offlist.

Yes, I've heard of dude ranches before. Billy Joel was in a film about a
dude ranch years ago, it was really a funny film.

I take it then that you can't leave your parents so that you could take a
trip out west to visit friends? And you have to hang around with your
parents until they are no longer with you, or us?

What are you going to do if they live another 20 years or more? That is not
too uncommon today with all the medical help out there. I'd hate to see you
waste this part of your life just waiting for your parents to leave you.

Have you ever heard of respite care workers? They come and take over for
you so that you can get a break. Taking care of our parents long term is OK
but you've also got a life to live, Daisy. We have discussed this very same
issue here at our home so I know how you must be feeling. There is help for
you and those in your situation. Here, we have both said that we do not
want to look down the road 20 years from now and wonder where that time went
- -- because we thought we must be the "good child" and take care of our
parents all by ourselves. I would hope that your parents also want you to
have a full life -- outside of theirs.

Please see if you can get some help with those in the respite care
profession, it would do all of you a world of good.
