Hi Everyone:

Thanks to Jo Ann's generosity and some lucky finds from RJ and others, the
interior of my 1955 Bubble will be completely original once again - ice box,
fresh water tank, Panel Ray heater, pump faucet, etc. Except for just one
thing - the 14x14 Hehr vent. Does any one have one that they'd be willing
to part with? I'm particularly interested in one with a fan in it, but a
plain one would be great too.

By the way, I had a really fun visit to Tad Taylor at Healthy Homes last
Saturday - I picked up a 1957 toilet from him. He's making noise about
giving up the trailer side of his business, and is anxious to get rid of
various parts he has hanging around. But at the same time he told me he has
four Airstream trailers coming in this week so I guess he's having a hard
time letting go..... His yard is full of vintage airstreams - a wonderful
sight!

Thanks,
Deborah

Jim,

It may be time for you to think of changing insurance companies for your
trailer. Try one that insures classic cars, they should be better equipped
(and more knowledgeable) than your current company.

Louis,

While you are looking for someone to do this job, why don't you give Steve
Ruth in Ohio a call? He and his son are very good at body work on
Airstreams. Where are you located? I missed your original post.

Looked at an advertised 28' A/S today, and found out that it is a 1978 31'
Sov, rear bath, center twins.

The inside is a bit rough, but liveable, has new carpet with vinyl sheet in
the kitchen and bath areas. All the water lines have been replaced with PEX.
Usual stove top, with an oven built in the wall to the right of the sink.

Also has awnings (ZipDee's) on both sides. While doing the re-plumbing, the
current owner has made a new connection for shore side water, inside the
rear hatch.

Some of the tambour needs replacement, but it looks like a good project rig.
He is asking $5600, but will take less, I'm sure.

Anyone interested please contact me off-line. I was looking for a smaller
one. The rig is located in Phoenix.

Deborah, what parts specifically do you need? All I have is the aluminum
cover that has a translucent "skylight." The plastic skylight needs
replacing. I don't have the elevating mechanism but they show up from time
to time from Airstreamers who have replaced the original vent with a
Fantastic Fan.

Jim Smith.

Old Airstream can and do have a tremendous value.

We have a customer with a 1965 17 foot Caravel, that has it insured for
$46,000.00

She can justify that with the receipts that she has for all the special
modifications that were made.

Most any insurance company, will accept a certified "written" value appraisel
from someone or a company that is a recognized Airstream authority, or
expert, and has the credentials to back it up.

That usually leaves a dealer out, unless they have been around for a long
long time.

Photo's and receipts for improvements, would be a must. Generally speaking
receipts for routine repairs only indicate the degree of maintenance.

I am selling the refrigerator out of my 1977 Overlander International.
It is in good condition, runs fine on electric or gas. I am changing
to an electric only fridge that matches my sink and stove. :) I will
probably regret the change, but anyway, if anyone is interested please
make an offer. It is an RM 100, with woodgrain front, 2 door. I think
the fridges are the same in all that years' units, but I don't know for
sure.

Hi Tom,
I just ordered one and have not had to use it yet. I will use it in my
Toyota Chinook which is considerably smaller than the 26' Overlander I
have. I hope it does well, however, I doubt it will be as effecient here
in the South (GA) as it would in the desert of Arizona. Hopefully it
will work in the highter elevations ie, GA mountains.

not flaming you, but what you said....big difference per netiquette.

BS! no object is worth anymore to someone else than what that person (or nation
of owners...!) is willing to pay for it. you think that very many people would
pay for an airstream with a sauna in the living room?? and other such
craziness.
I do not care how much in the way of receipts the owner has even if I want to
buy it. Even if I love it, I would not possibly pay more than $8000 for it
because that is all I want to pay for it.

iow, that item is worth only as much to the owner as the owner can get a buyer
to pay for it. thus... fair market value (FMV).

And most insurance companies -- unless there is an ITEMIZED replacement value
floater on the policy (and I have NEVER seen such a thing for other than
collections, etc) are only going to be willing to pay replacement or the average
of similar trailers regardless of amendments or they are just going to total it
out for the same FMV... iow, about $3,000
oh also, those receipted amendments depreciate from year to year usually over
about 5 yrs, max of 10. like a water heater or furnace.

and that is my experience with the industry as an AS mechanic for awhile and my
own exposures with my own trailers with USAA and other adjustors.

your turn..

Congratulations on your "new" Airstream. If it's towable and reasonably
livable, come up to Colorado in late July/early August and join us all at
the Rocky Mountain VAC Rally. You'll meet a great bunch of people and get
some really good help and advice.

yes well, that is the third choice that I thought of after I pushed the send
button. but figured that you are someone would catch it. yes, there is always
some insurance company which makes very good money insuring Betty Grable's legs
or Monroe's whatever, these are called "high risk" exposures and are known as
very high premium plans. after all, if you can get rain out insurance on a
county fair...shrug...

some kind of thin plate in a track that you can slide open from the side ?

I'd need to see how it works to make any sense of it.

Or a cover that goes over the inside opening with a magnet or velcro to
hold it there ?

I have been a USAA member since 1966... that said...

well, as you know (or at least 5 or 6 yrs ago) all USAA carried was the
equivalent of apartment renter's insurance or perhaps an auto style policy with
contents being a portion of your homes contents covaerage - about 10%.

anyway, in 1998, we got caught in a hail storm one night at the Whittington
Center on the way back to Houston. the hail was about fist sized and it trashed
both of the vintage vent covers (21 yr old ) -- they shattered like glass.

plus lots of dents. got into Sims in Lubbock and they replaced the vent covers
and we pulled it on home here in Houston. USAA came by and looked at the dents
and called it a total loss (we had just bought this pampered baby of an IBM exec
on that trip at SLO, Kalifornia for 6300$ because it had been tricked out with
all the Excella goodies, it was immaculate with new carpet, etc.

So I got ahold of Sims' chief mechanic and their sales boss (I did this before
leaving for Houston and gave them a heads up just in case this were to happen)
and they both sent a statement of value on letterhead , etc... anyway, USAA
eventually gave me some 4 figures for repair and we called it even.

Since then, I have been getting for real insurance from Progressive. ie,
genuine RV coverage since I still do not know that USAA carries such insurance
policies to this day. besides, a neighbor down teh street is the senior writing
agent for 90% of all motorcycles here in Harris Co. makes it convenient.

thanks for the reminder, I need to take him over to the yard to give me policy
inspection tomorrow before I leave for Lubbock for repair work at Sims.
hope this helps
cheers
