Subject: [VAL] T handle on Waste valve

Karl,
On my 62' Safari the T handle is basically a small metal tube with a
large spring clip acting as the top of the T that is what you pull on,
and the other end being the tube that slides over a rod (which is
square) coming out of the waste valve body that is attached by another
small spring clip. My tank was accessable by a panel that was screwed on
to the belly pan. Sounds like all you need to do is replace that sping
clip. You may have to push or punch out the remains of the old clip.
Slide T handle through side hole in belly pan and install with new
clip.(Any hardware store, look's like a small tube with a slit running
the length of the tube). I am not sure what else you might find after
removing the panel...That's always the fun part. I had to replace all of
my gaskets in my brass valve gate because of a small drip drip leak .So
that had to come out also for me to do that. I had been applying
penetrating oil for several months before to prep the screw head bolts
for removal. The bolts were easy to remove maybe because of the brass.
I would not think there is anything attached or held in place by a body
panel. Twenty five bolts one at a time. That should slow removal down
enough to be able to observe what's inside while you are removing the
panel. Hope that helps..

Louis,

While Jackson Center is closer, it will also be more expensive. I have had
very good experience with Ace Fogdall RV (an Airstream dealer for 40 some
years) in Cedar Falls Iowa. Their number is 800-747-0747. You may wish to
give them both a call. However I will say this is their BUSY season. Neither
one is likely to WANT to do the major work that you want to have done NOW.
They would most likely be more receptive to doing the work next winter
during their slow season.

Louis,

I've had two trailers with shell/frame separation problems and I took
both to the A/S plant for repair. They didn't remove the bath in my 67
Safari, it was repaired from under the bath. Same fix for under the bed
in my 54 Flying Cloud. I don't know exactly what it cost as it was
buried in a much larger bill that included all work done.

It is doubtful a 2004 Henschen axle will drop into place on a 1966
frame. Henschen changed the mount bracket design over the years.
Doubtful the shock mounts will be the same either. Modifications can be
done with a big drill (11/16") and a torch and welder though.

Andy at InLandRV.com is the only source for the axles...

Best of luck,

Before pulling all those bolts and hanging the panel on just the last
couple (which will probably break something), stack up bricks or wood
blocks two or three places under the panel, and a carpet scrap or folded
towel pad on top would be good, to hold the panel up until after all the
screws are out. Then you won't bend or break things.

Hi everyone,

We are Jack and Lynn Britton and I think we are new
members of your group. We are also new owners of a '73
Excella 500 that we haven't even pick up yet. We are
also new to rvs although we have spent the last 15
years living aboard our sailboat in the Caribbean.
Some of the same systems are used in both, but a whole
lot of this stuff is new to me and as you can tell
from all the 'news' in this note, we are going to need
lots of advice!!

We are currently working at Crabtree Meadows on the
Blue Ridge Parkway so if you are up this way this
summer, stop in and say hello.

Anyway, thanks for letting us into your group. Jack &
Lynn

I think it would be too much trouble to keep the cooler filled with ice, and
it would get in the way when you wanted to get a cool one from the chest.

There was a fire at the plant this past Sat. I emailed Dicky Riegel,
the CEO of Airstream who just acquired a 54 Flying Cloud that is
currently inside the service center getting a face-lift. Here is his
reply:

Thanks for your concern Patti. With great fortune, there were no
associated injuries with the fire this past weekend and the property
damage was confined to a relatively small area, and to only a few
service units. Yes, my trailer was inside, but should be o.k. The body
and chassis are separated, and totally stripped, so there was little or
nothing to damage.

Everyone is here this morning and the company is up and running.

Thanks again for your concerns.

No, but I want one ! here is how you survive and International ( and no,
I don't want to talk about VT, it NEVER gets...)

Put soda bottles full of water in the freezer and then in that gizmo.

Hmm how big is my coleman cooler...

Subject: Re: [VAL] Henschen replacement axles

Curtis,

It will not be a direct bolt in exchange of axles, but it shouldn't be all
that difficult either. I changed the axle on my '66 Globe Trotter about a
year and a half back. Of course you will have two axles to change. Contact
Inland RV for specifics. They will want to know what axles you currently
have, so get under your unit and look for a metal tag on your axles. They
will be dirty and hard to read, but write down everything or even perhaps
make a rubbing. While you are under there make a note as to whether your
shocks are mounted horizontally, or vertically. If they are mounted
horizontally you are in luck as the replacement axles will have the mounting
stud already welded on. Otherwise the mounting stud will be sent separate
and you and your welder will have to figure out the best place to weld it to
the axle plate.

This is a very worthwhile project though. It will increase the net carrying
capacity of your Trade Wind and if you opt for new brakes with the new axles
you will also increase the braking power of your unit. Ground clearance will
also increase to about one inch more than when your Trade Wind was brand
new. As far as mounting the axle the attaching bolt hole pattern is
different and some new holes will have to be drilled. But the slot in the
frame plate will accommodate the new axle with little or no grinding. If you
do most of the job on your own just be sure to use adequate safety jacks.
Try to place them where they will not interfere with maneuvering the old
axles out and new axles in.

The price for all of this will be about $850 per axle, or $1,700.

Jack stands (with wood and carpet pads), jacks, and several helping

How much will new axles increase the value of the trailer??? I realise there
are necessary but as I have been told that after probly 8K of improviments on
the Silver Abaltross(1965 Tradewind) it is still an 38 year old trailer and
still has no real value. Tool old for the blue book. My ins co tells me I would
have to show recieps for eavery thing I spent on it and my labour is worless

Airstreams are worthless.Never less I will still continue to build it up to what
