Subject: [VAL] used fabric from 69 safari

We've completed renovation of our 69 Safari, including the recovering of the
upholstery. Could anyone use the old fabric? Ours was the green and blue
striped. It is very worn in spots, and in pretty good shape in others. We had
planned to throw it away, but thought before doing so, I'd offer it for the cost of
shipping to anyone who might have a need for it. Please note, it is not in
good enough condition to use as a complete replacement. There are, however,
significantly large pieces that are in pretty good shape and would be ideal for a
patch or repair. We have the two couch model (not the dinette). Thanks!

Dr. G,
I had a look at Monroe #94005 when I was searching for shocks for my 59
Ambassador and found them to be larger in diameter than the Monroe #55850
that I finally purchased. I was concerned that #94005 shock would rub on the
chassis. Overall length of #94005 was the same as #55850 as well. I also
checked the length of the shocks on my 66 Safari and they appear to be the
same as what was originally on the 59 Ambassador (leaf spring suspension) so
I would imagine #55850 would also fit vertical shocked Henshen Axled
trailers as well.
I also replaced the complete electric brake assembly on the 59 Ambassador at
the same time. After quite a bit of research and comparing my axles with
what is available today, along with current weight ratings, I discovered the
following:
 Modern 3500 lb axles are 2 3/8" dia and have 10" dia drums with 2 1/2 "
wide shoes. Some of these drums are available with six studs which match
the Airstream wheel however many are five stud.
Modern 6000 lb axles are 3" dia and have 12" dia drums with 2" wide shoes.
My 59 Ambassador has 2 1/2" dia axle which I am assuming was the 3500 lb
axle standard back in 59, however it also has 12" dia drums with 2" wide
shoes. I didn't really want to downsize my brakes even if current axle
ratings use smaller components. I took a chance and ordered Dexter 6000 lb
brake assembly/backing plates from www.rigidhitch.com pt# 23-106 (rh
side) and pt# 23-105 (lh side) and they bolted right onto my vintage axles
without any modifications at all. The center hole, bolt pattern fit the drop
axle flange and offset matched perfectly with the original Airstream drum.
With these brakes on a tandem axle trailer weighing in dry at only 3700 lbs
along with the tow vehicle rated at 8600 gvwr, this rig will pretty much
stop on a dime. I have been very pleased with my choices.
Hopefully this helps out others with their brake & shock............. woes.
Colin

Hello,

Have any of you replaced the axles on a 1966 Trade Wind with new axles from
Henschen?

Did you experience any mounting problems?

I want to replace mine, and I do not want to have to make any modification to
make the new one fit. I want to remove the old, and bolt on the new.

Your input is appreciated.

While the Dexter axle doesn't automatically come made to fit, the option
of a parking brake and half the price of the Henschen's makes it
interesting. Buying the Dexter axle does require some careful
measurement and probably the drilling of a hole or two in the axle
mounting plate at each end of each axle.

Good practical information. Many times the original brake makers have
been out of business 20 years and the after market parts makers have
given up making spare parts or "universal" parts don't fit.

Its possible that the brake plate bolt pattern is set by an SAE standard
so that brake plates will interchange.

Do you still have that 50's ceiling fixture that we talked about? If
so, and still want to part with it, what are the dimensions? It bothers

Subject: Re: [VAL] Henschen replacement axles

Hi Curtis,

You most likely already found out that any Henchen axle over 25 years old
must come from Inland RV. Andy has the specifics for each vintage axle and
Henchen makes it to his specifications. Should be a bolt in with no
modifications. However, I've read where the shock mount tab might be
missing and/or in a different location.

I chose to buy the Dexter for my '69 Safari, upped the weight by 10 percent,
ordered a 32 degree start down angle, and the parking brake. The parking
brake is not an option for Henchen that I know of.

I've yet to get some help to install the new axle, but my measurements
suggest that I will use one of the existing Henchen mounting holes and drill
the second hole to match the Dexter pre-drilled hole.

One day, I'll report the outcome to the list!

                    Regards, '69 Safari, Joy
