Greetings Cathy!

Welcome to the world of Vintage Airstream ownership, and the world of the
'64 Overlander International!

Regarding your question about furniture. In the Vintage Airstreams, the
furniture was built by Airstream to fit the dimensions of the coach in much
the same way that custom cabinets are fitted in home kitchens today - - the
material was cabinet grade veneered plywood. Unlike many of today's
coaches, there weren't complex folding mechanism on the front lounge nor
would I expect to find them on the side convertible-lounge on the double-bed
configured coach (I have never really examined the side-double bed folding
mechanism as most of the Overlanders that I have come in contact with have
had the center twin-bed arrangement). To get an idea of what the original
cabinets looked like in a center-twin Overlander International Land Yach,
you can find photos of my coach at Airstreamphotos.com at the address below:

http://www.airstreamphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php/ppuser/827/cat/500

There are some photos of both before and after restoration. Just be
prepared that the photos are somewhat mixed together with those of my
Minuet.

The appliances utilized by Airstream in '64 were standard industry issue,
and most can be replaced by the modern equivalents with little fuss (most
have been replaced in my Overlander). The original refrigerator was a
Dometic gas/electric, the original furnace was an International Oil Burner
(Suburban makes a modern replacement that fit well in my coach), the
original water pump was a Peters and Russell (PAR, and they are still in
business making virtaully the same pump), the original power converter was a
Univolt (still available from your Airstream dealer but manufactured by a
different company), the original water heater was a Bowen 10-gallon (Atwood
makes the modern replacement in either 6-gallon or 10-gallon - I went with
6-gallon on my coach which necessitated modification to the original opening
to make it smaller), the original air conditioner if so equipped would have
been an Armstrong Bay Breeze (there isn't a true modern equivalent, but
there are a number of options available depending upon whether you want to
maintain the condesate drain or not), the original toilet was a china bowl
unit that I believe was produced by Thetford (Thetford no longer makes a
china replacement so far as I am aware, but there are several plastic
alternatives or Sealand produces a china bowl unit that is quite similar to
the original from what I have heard - - I have a Thetford Aqua-Magit IV in
my Overlander), the original faucet sets were by Moen (or at least they
were in my Overlander - - it has been speculated that the source could
vary), I believe that the 4-burner range in my Overlander is a Magic Chef
(but this is from memory and since I haven't had to make repairs can't say
definitely as it isn't listed in my notebook).

I have known my Overlander since it was new as it was in the possession of
friends' of my family from 1964 through 1980. When I purchased it very
little had been changed from original despite it having passed through the
hands of two other owners following my acquaintances. I also have most if
not all of the original literature that came with the coach.

Good luck with your Overlander!

I don't know if this is where I submit a question but, I
have one. I am trying to replace the valve unit that is on
the sewer line from the holding tank to the oulet line. I
can't find anyway to get at the old one to take it out. I
have a 74 Tradewind. The valve is right under the
shower stall so I can't get to it that way. Has anyone
ever replaced one???Thanks Mike from Manitou

By all means replace the split rims .Almost no one will work on them I would
also assume that it is time to replace yhe tires as if nothing else they are
suffering from age. I will not comment about the axles depends on the condition
od the rubber inserts. Breakx and bearings should be serviced when you change
the wheels.

How about the protocol of the "Slabs".??? Is it run like a campground, or
like an abandoned air base..???

How do you get in and how long can you stay???

I seem to recall an article about the "Slabs" some time ago that pointed
out no water, no power,no facilities except for a group that sponsored a
dinner periodically...

If the split rims are still together, they aren't going to fall apart on their own,
so they aren't suicidal for you, but certain split rims have a history of coming apart
while being inflated and flying rim parts have been known to amputate portions of the
tire shop worker's anatomy. Makes shops and their insurer's reluctant to work on them
these days.

Yes you should replace them with modern rims. Things you need to match include: weight
rating, offset (distance from the center position the mounting plane is), the number of
studs, the bolt hole circle, the rim diameter, the rim width and the center hole diameter.
Airstreams have a long history of being very picky about tire size and placement in somewhat
undersized wheel wells. That makes all those wheel dimensions critical in a replacement
wheel so its possible to fit the replacement wheel and tire in the Airstream wheel well.

If your axles are mounted on leaf springs, they probably won't need to be replaced. If they
are trailing arm Henschen axles and haven't been replaced they probably need replacement.
The clue to need of replacement is the angle of the trailing arm. If its trailing down the
axle is fine, if level or upward, the axle needs help. Used to be Henschen would rebuild
them. But now, there are other choices but rebuilding is not an option. You can buy new
axles from Inland RV for a princely sum (plus much shipping) or you can go to Dexter axles
for only half that princely sum. The Dexter axles require careful measurement for their
custom order process.

I'd like to put two in the Argosy and the inivolt is in the bath room so I
don't hear the HUM unless I listen for it!
Not ready to drop the bucks for the optima's and an intellivolt at the same

Actually, I don't know any batteries that are fond of the Univolt. I got
rid of mine and put in an InteliPower with the Charge Wizard....that's why
my AGM's have lasted so long. With the Univolt, I was lucky to have a
battery last a year.

Diesel was $2.05 here in Mesa today....more than regular unleaded.

It may cost more for fuel than the rally fees at the August VAC rally.

Take care,

Hey all out in vintage land,

Need an obscure part and figured this was the best place to ask. I'm redoing
the dinette table in our '59 TradeWind and want to have it resemble more
closely the original set-up which means I need the metal strip that attaches
to the table and connects to the wall just under the front window. I have
the piece that attaches to the wall, just need the table piece. I know they
make a new one but it is aluminum and just not as sturdy as the original
steel one. it should only be about 14" in length.

Thanks for your consideration.

Subject: [VAL] Yet more Argosy Questions

Hi Kevin,

I hate to keep making myself a pain in the neck, but while driving home I
ran across a rather sad Argosy sitting in a parking lot with a for sale sign
on it. It's a 1974 Argosy 22. Paint is SHOT. Peeling, dull, you name it.
On the other hand, that seems to be the worst of it. The interior fabric is
not original but seems in decent shape. Per the sign, the appliances work
although the water heater seems to have a slow leak and I'd need to replace
that. The axles are marginal and will likely need replacing sometime in the
next couple of years. The price is better than the previous trailer I was
looking at.

Without sending you digging into your vault, do you happen to have the
weight information for this type of trailer. It does have tandem axles
which I would prefer and the tires are relatively new.

Regards,

Bob Hupp

Subject: [VAL] furnace question

I am about to order a furnace for my 22 ' 1963 flying cloud . I was wondering
how many btu furnaces similar size trailers came with for various years (even
recent trailers ) . I took a 24000 btu furnace out of it , I dont know if it was
the original , but I am thinking of upping the btu of the new one as I live in
the frozen north , below freezing here the other night , STILL , and I am known
for dry camping late (and early )in the season. Heck , summer here last from the
fourth of july thru first weekend in august ,then it starts getting cold again .

I am not afraid of running an extra vent , however I dont want to have the
thing cycling all the time on just the chilly night and burning the controls up
, nor do I want to lay in bed with my teeth chattering if I go in november . Or
burn it up from running constantly .
I have reinsulated the whole thing so that will help . One thing in favor of
24000 btu is that they draw 3.5 amps as opposed to 5.5 for 30000 btu , which
would be good when I`m on solar and battery only , which is most of my camping .

Any thoughts , anyone gone here before me ?

Congradulations on taking the plunge. As far as where to start this project,
the best advice given to me when we got started was to get the trailer to a point
where you can start using it soonest, to avoid losing interest. Too many projects
drag on for so long that before you know it the For Sale sign is back on it - (too
much investment and not enough return). That would mean putting the interior and
mechanicals (running gear and utilities) as first priority before worrying about
the exterior cosmetics.

Since you already know about the VA list and Tom Paterson's archives, I would point
you to other resources including RJ Dial's site:
www.vintageairstream.com

And the link site:
www.airstreamtrailers.com

These two resources should get you started on the right foot.

Subject: [VAL] answer to questions from my introduction debut

Well, all, back from vacation and glad to be back home where all the
work
lurks.

Thank you for the warm welcome. Looking on the plaque of my airstream
and
doing some research on decoding it, I have determined that we have a
1964, not
'62 as I stated. Sorry. Also, its full name is an Overlander
International
Land Yacht.

I have posted the before pictures of our baby at
http://www.momanson.com/airstream and will update as we go along.

We are trying to decide whether to start on the exterior polishing and
fixing
or on the interior first. I think we want to refurbish not restore the
interior, as there is so much of the original missing. Does anyone
know of a
manf. or supplier that makes new RV appliances and furniture with the
retro
look?

We also need some advice on whether we should replace the 'sucide'
split rimed
wheels. Where should be take it to have that done and will we have to
replace whole axles, too?

Chris,

My InteliPower only charges one AGM battery, and I've never had an
overcharge situation. The Charge Wizard senses the battery condition and
cycles as required to top it off or trickle.

The other two AGMs are recharged from the solar panels, and are mainly used
through the inverter when I need low current AC power.

AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) is _not_ gel cell.
