Subject: [VAL] Region 7 VAC Rally- The Tow In

Hello All
Just a quick plug for this year's Region 7 VAC Rally. We will be holding
the Vintage Buddy Rally (we are calling this rally the Tow In) on July
29 - August 1, 2004 in Appleton (Greenville), WI. We have secured a
great site at the Greenville Grange, lots of grassy parking, great
building to hold events, an open house, some water and electric. ( we
should be able to get you all water). Appleton is 19 miles from Oshkosh,
WI, and why do I bring this up? This is the same weekend as the EAA Fly
In! If you have always wanted to see this Air show but could not find a
spot to park for the weekend now is your chance to meet up with some
Vintage Airstreamers and go to the greatest air show in the country all
in the same weekend. Parking will start on Thursday at noon and our
departure day will be Sunday. I will have more information as we develop
the activities for the weekend, drop me a line if you are interested in
attending this one of a kind Vintage Rally.

thanks
Ed

Jerry The inside of the wheel is a flat surface and the lugs are long
enough. My uncle bought 2 of these wheels for his 65 Safari and they work
fine on his unit as well. I will try to email you a picture shortly off the

Subject: [VAL] List etiquette

On reviewing the messages from yesterday, it appears that I caught the wrong
party, so am reinstating Anderson.

What is obvious though is that there are a number of guilty parties. The
original perpetrator, as well as all who replied to the subject matter. This
is not a joke list, nor a military list, nor a political list. It is a
Vintage Airstream List, and the topics discussed need to have some
relationship to Vintage Airstreams. Naturally, there is going to be some
drifting off topic, but you all know, or should know when the subject goes too
far off-topic. If anyone has a problem with this, then adios!

I happen to be on the road, and the moderators travel as well. The list is
not monitored every second of the day, so you all need to realize this fact.
We do read all posts at some point however, so can, and will take all required
actions at a later time. It is not necessary for you to scream for help!
What is necessary is for all to act as adults.

There are over 800 members of the list, and most are responsible. Some
obviously are not, and future transgressors will be removed.

Cut it out. This is not a political forum. Definitely out of place. I'm
sure the rest of us don't want me to give the history of the Star
Spangled Banner, pledge of allegiance, etc., on this forum.

PINK and no chips . Its dirty with usual rust . I think these went in early
airstreams and spartans , if anyone is interested I could check and see if the
dump guys havent run it over wuth the backhoe ( they love to do that ) monday .
Shipping might be a problem , or not worth it . I just could`nt justify taking
it myself - I`ve sworn of junk and more airstreams .

Would the uncharacteristically silent list monitors wish to weigh in
with a ruling on this matter?

I hope it never becomes the vogue that patriotism be associated with
arrogant, crude, self-righteousness.

Army Ranger Pat Tillman, whose tragic death in Afghanistan was reported
today, was a fine example of a supreme patriot who served mankind with
dignity, humility, and grace. A real class act patriot.

Subject: [VAL] Mini Stash - soft copper wire

Hey Gang,

Here's another idea for those who save "stuff" just because it "might"
be useful.

Most of my friends with a mechanical bent know that soft copper wire
can be shaped into all manner of helpful devices when a third hand
(thumb and forefinger) or a small hook is needed when in a jam and
working by ourselves on a project. Today, I learned another use for my
12" piece of soft copper wire.

After pulling into a Wendy's parking lot, I tried to open our
Airstream's door. It opened about 1/4 inch, but wouldn't open more. Our
new screen door lock; which I had fabricated from a twist lock for
holding storm windows in place; had been jarred enough during today's
travel so that it had rotated into the locked position.

Thus, the screen door was locked against the door frame from inside
with the screen door locked against the outside door by the standard
slide bar lock. End result, the door wouldn't open. True, I could have
used a crow bar and broken off the pop rivet used to secure the twist
lock, but that seemed like overkill.

Instead, I shaped the piece of soft copper wire to slide up through the
opening and acquire the correct shape as I turned it to a horizontal
position. Once in the horizontal position, I could slide the wire
downward with a little vertical sliding pressure. That's all it took to
rotate the twist lock and open the screen door. I used a pair of
locking pliers clamped on the wire to facilitate guiding the wire. My
efforts to manage with just my fingers were unsuccessful. The pliers
provided more than sufficient "purchase" for sliding the wire down the
two door frames on the inside.

Bottom line, this was a case where one of my bright ideas (twist lock
for screen door) worked like a charm when the outside door is open, but
caused a problem when the outside door was closed and we were driving
over bumpy roads. I'm going to improve on that idea one of these days.
In the meantime, I'm using masking tape to keep the twist lock open
when the outside door and screen door are closed and we're rolling.

My whole idea for using a twist lock was to create a puzzle for anyone
trying to open the screen door without our permission (children who
want to pet our cats after they see them sitting there). Then, there
are the few people who knock and open the screen door without regard to
any "just a moment, please" statement.

Enough for now,

Terry

Subject: [VAL] New Orleans Garage

Hi Gang,

One of my favorite ways to locate needed services in a community is to
look for Mom and Pop businesses that have been around for 50 or more
years. In some areas of the country, it's easy to do. New Orleans is
one of those towns and Westwego was the neighborhood nearest our
campsite at Bayou Segnette State Park when I needed a garage.

Yesterday afternoon, I took our Van to Charles Muller's Garage on 225
Fourth Street in Westwego for a new starter ($56).

One of the mechanics (Curtis) installed the starter, made up a
replacement 4 foot long electrical cable ($15) and connected it to the
battery. The old cable had been "fried" where it was attached to the
starter.

While at it, I asked Curtiss to replace the battery ($62). It's been a
bit tired and has been drinking a lot of water lately.

All of this took about two hours ($65). When Charles (the owner) gave
me the bill, I objected to the low labor price, but he insisted, so I
paid it and tipped Curtis on the way out.

Will I return to this garage in the future for routine maintenance or
needed repairs? You bet I will. This garage is listed in my PDA under
reputable garages for repair of my 1978 Ford Van E-250 with a 460 CID
V8 and 375,000 towing miles on the odometer.

Subject: [VAL] Mini Stash - McD stirrers

Hi Gang,

Every so often a problem comes along that's no big deal, yet is a real
inconvenience at the moment. One of those occasions occurred recently.

After a 200 mile run, we stopped for the day and I went inside - only
to find the plastic air conditioner filter housing on the floor. It had
fallen out because one of the four plastic snaps (1/8" x 1/2") holding
it in the housing had cracked, thus releasing it from the housing. The
snap hadn't broken off but was no longer able to exert its' share of
pressure to hold the filter housing into the air conditioner's body.
The other three snaps were in good condition.

In my Mini Stash box I've collected an assortment of small plastic and
wooden utensils. Some are typically used for stirring cream in a cup of
coffee. With a few trial and error comparisons, I noticed the spade
portion of a McDonald's stirrer was an exact fit between the slots
where the snap was located.

By breaking off two spades, applying superglue to one side of both, I
secured one spade on each side of the cracked snap with locking pliers.
The next morning when I released the locking pliers, the glue had
completely dried, the snap was repaired and the joint was stronger than
when originally made.

After cleaning the filter and re-inserting it in the housing, I put the
housing back into the air conditioner body. All four snaps held it
securely. Problem solved?

Today we made the run from Bayou Segnette SP in New Orleans along I-10
and north on I-59 to the COE Campground in Collinsville, Mississippi.
When I went inside our trailer, the filter housing was still in place.
Yes - problem solved!

Sometimes solutions to problems are no farther away than combining a
little ingenuity with the odds and ends we accumulate during our daily
activities.

Terry

needed for more than a one or two night stay? Yes. How far in advance
