Joann,
The cable ferry south of here is quite large and could probably handle a Greyhound
bus. I haven't been on it myself, but I catch a glimpse of it everytime I pass by
on the highway. Not to be confused, though, with the photo of the gondola--this
ferry is in the water!

I think that the vehicle air-tram in Tom's photo probably was taken near
Boston Bar, B.C. - on the TransCanada #1 - in the Fraser River
Canyon just north of Hell's Gate.

At that point in the canyon - the highway is on the east side of the
canyon -
as is the town of Boston Bar. Across the river is North Bend and Keefers.

Tiny little places - a few farms and the ever present railroad - and if
memory
serves me - a logging facility at North Bend. It's been at least 10 years
since
I last led a tour through that area (I used to drive the Fraser River Canyon
on Hwy 1 twice a month from May-Sept) but as I remember North Bend
was a place where the logging operations pulled rafts of logs that were
"free-floated" down the river...to North Bend. At that point they had to
be hooked and pulled out as the log rafts would not survive the rough
water of Hell's Gate. The logs were transferred to the train at that
point. At that point in the Canyon - it would be the Canadian Pacific
tracks on the North Bend side and the Canadian National tracks on the
Boston Bar side. (the story of which company got there first and who got
which side of the river is a good story...too long for here...)

So - the air tram at that point was not for heavy traffic - the railroad
would
have taken care of commericial traffic - it was just for local access to a
tiny
little area deep in the canyon.

At some point - a bridge was built adjacent to that vehicle air-tram and the
tram was shut down. However - they did not remove the base station on
the west side of the river (across the river from Hwy 1). As I remember
the last time I drove the Canyon about 10 years ago - the air-tram base
station was still there.

That is more than you probably wanted to know...RL

Military Rules for the Non-Military Personnel

Dear Civilians, We know that the current
state of affairs in our great nation have many
civilians up in arms and excited to join the
military.

For those of you who can't join, you can
still lend a hand. Here are a few of the areas in
which we would like your assistance:

1) The next time you see an adult talking
(or wearing a hat) during the playing of the
National Anthem .. kick their ass.

2) When you witness firsthand someone
burning the American Flag in protest...kick their
ass.

3) Regardless of the rank they held while
they served, pay the highest amount of respect to
all veterans. If you see anyone doing otherwise,
quietly pull them aside and explain how these Veterans
fought for the very freedom they bask in every second.
Enlighten them on the many sacrifices these Veterans
made to make this Nation great. Then hold them down
while a Disabled Veteran kicks their ass.

4) (GUYS) If you were never in the military,
DO NOT pretend that you were. Wearing battle dress
uniforms (BDU's), telling others that you
used to be "Special Forces," and collecting GI Joe
memorabilia, might have been okay if you were still
seven. Now, it will only make you look
stupid and get your ass kicked.

5) Next time you come across an Air Force
member, do not ask them, "Do you fly a jet?" Not
everyone in the Air Force is a pilot. Such
Ignorance deserves an ass kicking (children are
exempt).

6) If you witness someone calling the U.S.
Coast Guard non military, inform them of their
mistake...and kick their ass.

7) Roseanne Barr's singing of the National
Anthem is not a blooper...it was a disgrace and
disrespectful. Laugh, and sooner or
later your ass will be kicked.

8) Next time Old Glory (U.S. flag) prances
by during a parade, get on your damn feet and pay
homage to her by placing your hand over
your heart. Quietly thank the military member or
veteran lucky enough to be carrying her...of course,
failure to do either of those could earn you
a severe ass kicking.

9) Don't try to discuss politics with a
military member or a veteran. We are Americans and
we all bleed the same regardless of our
party affiliation. Our Chain of Command, is to
include our commander in Chief. The President (for
those who didn't know) is our CIC regardless of
political party. We have no inside track on what
happens inside those big important buildings where
all those "representatives" meet. All we
know is that when those civilian representatives
screw up the situation, they call upon the military
to go straighten it out. The military member
might direct you to Oliver North. (I can see him
kicking your ass already.)

10) "Your mama wears combat boots" never
made sense to me ...stop saying it! If she did, she
would most likely be a vet and therefore,
could kick your ass!

11) Bin Laden and the Taliban are not communists, so
stop saying "Let's go kill those Commie's!!!" And
stop asking us where he is!!!!
Crystal balls are not standard issue in the
military. That reminds me, if you see anyone calling
those damn psychic phone numbers; let me know,
so I can go kick their ass.

12) Flyboy (Air Force), Jar Head (Marines),
Grunt (Army), Squid (Navy) etc, are terms of
endearment we use describing each other.
Unless you are a service member or vet, you have not
earned the right to use them.
That could get your ass kicked.

13) Last but not least, whether or not you
become a member of the military, support our troops
and their families. Every Thanksgiving
and religious holiday that you enjoy with family and
friends, please remember that there are literally
thousands of sailors and troops far
from home wishing they could be with their families.
Thank God for our military and the sacrifices they
make every day. Without them, our
country would get its ass kicked.

It is the soldier, not the reporter who has
given us the freedom of the press.

It is the soldier, not the poet, who has
given us the freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
who gives us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who
serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped
by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag."

Authored by: Dennis Edward O'Brien, Sergeant, USMC

(Please pass this on so I won't have to kick your ass!)

Jacking points
I have a 66 tradewind that has been standing awhile. At the moment it is
on wheels with the four stabiliser jacks.
I need to put it on blocks to avoid any more tyre damage. Where under
the belly pan or between the axles is it safe to use a trolley jack and
what do you recommend as blocks. This will be for a few months.
I cannot find any jacking info in the handbook.

Crawl underneath your trailer, behind the axles. Locate the main frame at
the axle and follow it straight back about a foot or so. You should notice
an aluminum patch on both sides. This is the jacking point. Normally I use a
piece of wood between my jack and the trailer. Do not jack on the axles!

Don't overlook the combination LP/electric water heaters.
If my inside switched electronic lit heater (LP only) ever dies I will
get a combination unit.
Never had any trouble with this 25 year old unit.
"The $ never stops!"
Just like a house without wheels. Nothing lasts.

2024 is not considered a weldable alloy. The 6000 series, like 6061, is
weldable. Aluminum and its alloys do not solder well. Some will solder
but if there is much stress or vibration it will let go. There is a
discussion of weld problems at
http://www.scientific.net/0-87849-941-5/299.htm.
In a sense all metals are "welded" as they are liquid before initial
forming. But changes in crystalline structure take place during
solidification and forming. In the case of 2024 these changes make it
unsuitable for welding.

Thin sheet metal, even of weldable alloys, is very difficult to weld. It
tends to warp and to melt more than is wanted.

There are some "cold solders" that look sort of aluminumish after
setting. Duro's Plastic Aluminum is one. I think PO used JB-Weld on a
hole in the skin that was poked by a limb. Ugly. I put a piece of
aluminum tape over it. Looks less bad. Doesn't leak, though, and at least
it's on the utilities side of the trailer.

Did you test the fuse? Over the years I have had many glass "AGC" style
fuses go open without obviously blowing.
Sometimes one end cap will come off.
Test with an ohmmeter - a test light may blow the lower amp. fuses.
I have even had a brand new fuse or two be bad.

On the other hand, a fuse out of my ' 68 Tradewind that tested good with a
VOM wouldn't carry the current to operate any of the 12 volt equipment. I
finally isolated the problem by replacing the fuses one by one. Some of the
high amperage AGC type glass fuses used in Airstreams are hard to find.
Some SOB RV dealers don't have them either. I recommend a test light with
them.

High current (30 amp and above) 1/4 amp fuses aren't made by all fuse
makers. I think the contact area of the 1/4 amp can't really support
that magnitude of current without heating and making the fuse more
susceptible to melting. Then the fuse wire is large and tends to
fracture from vibration and from the elongation and shrinking from
heating and cooling with that size of load. Fuses for 30 amp and larger
loads should be fatter than 1/4", like 11/32" diameter and it wouldn't
hurt for the fuse clips and the fuse caps to be silver plated instead of
nickel plated.

For testing wiring I much prefer my test light to a meter. The meter is
so sensitive it can show full voltage from an accidental connection
while my test light (a 50 watt 12 volt edison based lamp in a socket
with switch and clip leads) draws 4 amps and won't light on accidental
connections. I use a fuse socket and switch combination often used for
local control at a furnace. Its mounted on a single gang handy box.
Wired as needed.

Greetings John!

Welcome to the world of Vintage Airstream ownership!

I can't help with all of your questions, but I can with this much
information.

You coach should be pre-wired for air conditioning and the drip tube should
be pre-installed. Airstream did not install its air conditioners in
existing vent openings, rather the necessary opening was cut a measured
distance from the number one roof bow (where front dome meets the main roof
panel on exterior of coach) to the rear - - the opening was then made at
that point - - bracing, wiring, and condesate drain would all be in that
location. Your Airstream Dealer should be able to assist with the placement
measurements for the air conditioning unit, or customer support at the
factory (http://www.airstream.com).

A double-check to be sure that your coach was pre-wired is to check the
circuit breaker panel or fuse box - - there should be an extra unused
circuit that was provided when coaches were pre-wired - - it is my
understanding that all Airstreams were pre-wired beginning in the
mid-1960s - - I know that my '64 Overlander International was pre-wired.

Greetings Harry!

Welcome to the world of Vintage Airstreaming!

There were only a limited number of Coleman air conditioners for which drip
pans were ever available, and that was several years ago according to my
understanding - - from what I have been able to learn, none of the current
model Coleman air conditioners are supported by Airstream with condesate
drain pans. I know neither of the Coleman air conditioners that I have on
my coaches had the option of drain pans. Living in the Mid-Mississippi
Valley, my air conditioners produce quite a bit of condesate that drains
down the sides - - on the Airstream is has posed no problem so long as I
keep the coach Walbernized (it was polished and Plasticoated by the Ruths
about three years ago) - - on the Argosy, it is a problem in that it
produces rust stains on the painted sides of the coach that must be polished
out each time the coach is waxed.

Good luck with your coach!

No, it wasn't more than I wanted to hear. It is very interesting. I
continue to be amazed at what was accomplished before we all had
electronics and computers. The little Airstream in the dramatic photo
reminds me of pictures of oxen and Calistoga wagons being hoisted up
and down mountains in slings with their legs hanging down. Wow.

Well, that's one man's opinion I guess. It probably is out-of-place,
given the focus of this list but it is timely and I don't thing it is
deliberately offensive.

Er....don't you mean Conestoga wagons. Or did you mean the oxen and wagons
that bring in the grape harvest in Calistoga, wine country? <grin>

We are as patriotic as can be, both raised by military parents and
Conrad served in the Navy for this county for 20 years, and one of the
first things we learned was what type of language to use in mixed
company.
