There is a section in the Home Depot that carries the frame material for
screens and storm windows. You could make your own custom frames.

Subject: [VAL] tank valves

The subject of tank valves got my attention and have a few questions. I
am approaching the final stretch of my Safari renovation and have
carefully avoided performing the water holding test. The valve was stuck
when I first tried to open it, but with a generous spray down of
lubricant and a firmer pull on the tee handle it slid in and out fairly
easily. I was happy to see that it operated so well and should have
tried the well holding test at that time, but I was a bit overwhelmed by
floor section replacement and waterproofing as a priority to protect the
work as I was proceeding on the interior. Last fall I removed to toilet
thinking it would be just as easy to replace it with a new one. I am
always looking for more ways to spend more money and this seemed like a
good candidate to just replace. After removal and inspection, it was in
perfect condition and seals were cleaned and replaced. While it was
out, I inspected the inside of the black water tank with flashlight and
mirrors and the tank looked perfect. This would have been the best time
to do the water test on the seal. But the weather was turning cold and
on that day I once again thought it best to keep it dry until spring.
It's Spring.... and Chris Elliott's comment about replacement gaskets
and their unavailability is scary. I would think valve replacement is
not something one does with the tank in place either? Next week I will
do the water holding test.
Depending on how it goes I will be out and about on Safari, or under and
over until everything is road ready.
Thoughts on valves and gaskets and replacements?
Thanks.

Subject: [VAL] Window/Screen Question

Hello All,
I'm replacing a window on my '56 Caravanner that had a piece of plex in
it,
and would like to know if anyone has the specifications for the glass.
Can
someone tell me the thickness, and if it is tempered in some way? I'm
also
doing the screens, and I can't seem to find an installation wheel that's

small enough to crease the screen into the perimeter groove. If anyone
can
offer a solution, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Brian Jenkins

Subject: [VAL] Fresh Water Tank

We just moved our 75 Ambassador from a trailer park where we were hooked up
for over 10 yrs. We had never filled our fresh water tank until last week.
We turned the water pump on and didn't get water. The pump is running and
sounds good, but not having access to manuals, we're stumped. Is there a
valve to turn on to get the water into the unit? What steps do we need to
take to check out the water pump? We will have water service to the
property in 2-3 weeks (hopefully) and once that happens, we'd like to empty
the fresh water tank. Is there a release valve to empty it?

Also, the transformer has always had a loud buzzing. What's causing it and
can it be fixed?

Thanks for your help.

Subject: [VAL] introduce myself and my baby

Hullo, everybody.
Would like to introduce ourselves. Joe and Cathy McGaughey. Bought our '62
International at the turn of the century, has been in storage and just now
am able to start working on it. Can everyone stand another 'how we found
our little jewel' story? Wellll, my husband, Joe, and I were driving down
45 into Galveston, just past the causeway when he saw an old travel trailer
for sale by an RV park. He whisked our car off the road toward the trailer
so fast I nearly fell out the door. We had discussed buying a travel
trailer about 2 years before and agreed that we were not that close to
retirement yet and wouldn't have time to use it much as we both worked -
classic case of ignorant thinking. As he disappeared into the office to ask
price, I sat in the car with a huge frown on my face looking at the worst
piece of junk I thought I had ever seen. Add to that is the fact that I am
claustrophobic and it looked like a death capsule from star trek to me. My
husband didn't come out of the office so after a few min. of silent cussing
I got out of the car and, being the generous soul I am, went over to the
death capsule and begin to try to find SOMETHING good about it.
The minute my hand touched the warm, tarnished aluminum skin at the end of
the trailer by the rockguard and rusted out propane tanks, I fell in love.
My husband came out of the office to find me literally leaning on it with
arms outstretched, soaking up the feel of 'Airstream'. He had talked the
park owner down to $650 and had come out to ask me what I thought. I
haven't stopped yet telling him what a brilliant man he is, about this
purchase anyway.
Well, to bring ya'll up to present time... We hooked up our treasure to the
surburbon and towed it home, 5 miles, after we had someone come out and tape
up the rear belly pan which was half off and trailing the asphalpt. Did I
mention it had been set up as a live-in and the last tenants had painted the
walls and cabinets black and used chalk to decorate with? All in all, I
think the poor thing was desperate for someone to love and appreciate it and
that it reached out to me that day. Call me sentimental, OK.

Our neighbors were not. They ALL hated it on first site and went so far as
to call the city and have the code inforcement offices out to demand we
remove it from the neighborhood! It was just setting there in front of our
garage ON OUR OWN PROPERTY NOT IN THE STREET, I had become quite proud of
it, too, after surfing the net and getting values and other personal stories
about Airstreams. Life is not fair. We located a local RV park that would
store it for us and took it there to be visited every week and checked on
too frequently (per the RV park manager who I think decided we didn't trust
him to keep it safe - but he DID say several people asked him about buying
it) It was in storage 2 years there.

We moved to East Texas, bought an acre of land and finally had the baby
towed home. It sat there 2 years and was top on the list of things we
needed to do and projects to start. Mistake... never move close to your
grown kids and think you will ever again have time to get anything done in
your life time.

How we longed for the simple life again. We moved to Garrison, TX just
before Christmas and towed the baby out here last month. The house we bought
has an RV hookup right beside it. We bought a 1999 Ford F250 with a V10 in
it. (Surburbon was stolen in Galveston the week before we moved away) We
are READY!

Let's get goin' on the fixin',

Subject: Re: [VAL] Fresh Water Tank

In order to pump water "from" the tank you must first put water "into" the
tank. I am not aware of anything that would allow you to be hooked up to a
city water supply and be able to fill the fresh water tank from inside the
trailer.

I believe you will have to use a water hose and from outside the trailer,
open the fill cap "to" the fresh water tank and then begin filling up the
tank that way. I am not aware of any in-line valves for you to switch this
way or that way to fill your tank up.

Find the fill cap on the trailer exterior, open the cap, put the hose into
the filler neck and begin to fill the fresh water holding tank. Do not
reconnect to the city water supply if you want to use the fresh water
holding tank. Once the tank has some water in it you can go inside the
trailer and open a faucet; you should be hearing the water pump running
then. And hopefully you will not have any leaks in any lines from the fresh
water holding tank to all the faucets and toilet.

There are valves underneath the trailers to empty the fresh water holding
tanks - these valves may even be in the "trunk" area at the rear of the
trailer, I'm not personally familiar with your model. But ALL these
trailers have valves, usually household outside spigot valves that open and
close the same was as a spigot on the side of a house. Look for them, you
will find them I am sure.

Subject: Re: [VAL] tank valves

Hi Gary,

Since I've replaced the OEM Thetford gate valve with something more
reasonably priced, I'm compelled to ask you to verify that the lubricant
you used to free the gate was compatible with the rubber seal. To my
knowledge this rubber material is pretty tough, but not to all petroleum
chemicals. It's my thought that a penetrating oil would destroy the seal.
The gate would operate, but not seal under pressure. The pull rod is
subject to corrosion and freezes, the gate sticks to the seal due to lack of
proper lubricant. If you can separate the gate valve, it would be prudent
to replace the seal.

A replacement was necessary in my Safari due to bolts swelled by rust and
impossible to remove from the plastic. My task was to drop the tank for
floor replacement and construction of a new housing and frame repair.

Like you, I'm not yet tested any of my restoration for water integrity. You
can appreciate that I had to remove all the plumbing by cutting and use
unions and rubber couplings to get the thing back together in the very
confined space. I've not yet remounted the tub, commode or the sink
plumbing. Just need a little round-to-it time.

That said, if I were to do this again, I'd use an above floor black water
tank on which would sit the commode (like my '74 Argosy) or other later
models where the tank sits in a corner of the bath and the dump drops
outside the frame rail. The existing black water could be used as a gray
water tank. You might try to look at how the above floor black water tanks
are constructed. The tanks hold about 12 gallons and would seldom be filled
while traveling. I easily lost 100 pounds from the rear of the Safari when
I replaced the OEM charger with a Intelli Power and the OEM water heater
with a modern replacement. The porcelain Thetford sure looked nice, but
replacement seals are near impossible to replace, so I went with a modern
version that shed many pounds.

The replacement Dexter axle still rests on the ground outside the Safari .
. .

Hope this is of some use for your purpose.

                            Regards, '69 Safari, Joy

Welcome to the group Joe and Cathy. First thing you should do is tell us
what model it is. International is not a model. Could be anywhere from a
Bambi 16' to a Sovereign 30'.

Have fun,

Hi CAT Welcome !

There are more of us than you might think that have a to do list that
gets in the way of our silver toy (s). Don't forget to take pictures so
we can see what you started with. Always an education to see what $650
will buy if you're lucky.

Subject: RE: [VAL] Fresh Water Tank

My '68 has a faucte type valve and a loop which allows me to fill the tank
from the city water supply. If you forget to close the valve the pump will
run all day and not move an ounce of water. The valve is on the drivers
side just forward of the water pump. Mine is underneath the couch so it is
a little difficult to get to. It also has the outside filler. There is
also a valve to open the tank drain just forward of the filler valve. I
think they are original as the system is shown in the owner's manual water
schematic. Feel free to contact me off line and I'll make a jpg of the
schematic.
When you talk of the transformer are you talking about the UNIVOLT? If so,
the only way I know to get rid of the loud buzzing is to replace it with a
new converter. There are several good ones on the market. Some also have
charge wizzard avilable to plug into the intellipower which tends the
battery. Very good option.

your reply to joe and cathy about the "international" brings up a question
from me. what did the international signify and mean in the different
models?

Hey Harry:

The answer to that may vary depending on the year. It is a package of
goodies that come with the top of the line or International Land Yacht
series (as opposed to the lowly plain Land Yacht series like I have). In
the era that yours and mine are, the best way to know is to download the '68
brochure that Nick Novia donated to the VAC website archive. It's a real
treasure. Takes a while to download (Acrobat file) but well worth it.
Among the nifty stuff is the Standard Specifications page which is is
crammed with fine print about the features of the trailers including what is
included with the International Land Yacht series.

Also it puts to rest some issues such as:

The tankage material (polyethylene)
The bathroom fixture material (fiberglass)
etc...etc...

Would be great if there were brochures like this for every year.

Subject: Re: [VAL] International? and other information

The best I can tell, "International" refers to a trim package or options
package. Probably has to do with water filter and pressure regulator,
wood finish, floor covering, curtain material, and fabrics on the
cushions.

I do find reference in my '68 owner's manual to clarify this question.
In the "international" control panel: there are switches for panel light
and night light. There is a clock and a battery condition tester and
ammeter with a car battery low automatic cut-out (page 41 of the 1968
owner's manual. Then on page 42 it tells about the holding tank level
indicator, the TV antenna, the cigarette lighter and 12 volt connection,
all standard on the "international" model.

On page 50 it talks about the water purifier, standard on international
models. The way it reads, the pressure regulator was standard on all
Airstreams.

So it appears the "Land Yacht" is the basic model, International
fancier. And I still suspect the International model had fancier
woodwork, finishes, and fabrics. At least these are some identifiable
differences.

And for reference, length is measured from rear bumper all the way to
the hitch. For several different lengths there were different model
names for different floor plans.

While I'm mining the owner's manual, it says that the interior wall
finish is vinyl, best washed with Tide and a bit of Clorox. The
interior woodwork is lacquered. The floor tile was vinyl-asbestos.

The window gaskets are neoprene rubber and are preserved with a product
called "slipicone."

My 59 Ambassador International has a battery box just outside and below the
front window, 110 v & 12v lamps in all of the fixtures, 12v dc/18v ac
ceiling fan, an Ogden water purifier, wall pads next to the twin beds, a 14
X 26 Astradome in the living room area, TV antenna and a compressor for the
water system. I think these were all "extras" above and beyond the Land
Yacht package. It also has approx. 6" dia aluminum "International" emblems
on each side of the front of the body and one in the back.

    All,

There's a mystery plate above the hanging locker in my 1969 Caravel.
It's on the streetside inner vinyl-clad skin a bit above the storage shelf.
It's 5' 6" off the floor and 6" aft of the forward bulkhead that separates
the locker from the galley. The vinyl-clad plate itself is 1 1/2" high and
2 1/4" wide.

As if to make sure no one misses it, there's a 6" arrow drawn directly
below it in pencil pointing straight up at it. The arrow is about chest
high in the lower hanging locker.

Does anyone have a guess as to what's under that plate and what purpose
the contents (wires, 12v. or 110v. possibly), has?

The screen saga drags on. The smallest spline I could find is still too
small to fit, even by itself, much less with the screen too, into the 1/8"
slot. I'll go on another spline search at the other screen shop in town
tomorrow.

Hi Chris
I just purchased a 65 Caravel that will need to be painted inside. I also
plan to spay it; how much paint did you use, one or two coats? Its not
clear if you bought 1 gallon and then ordered a second. The Caravel is a
little smaller than the cloud. Another point: did you have all of the
cabinets and beds out or did you mask around? I plan to have everything out
when I spray, then replace everything inside with new cabinets...another one
of my hobbies.

Check your local hardware stores. They may not sell the spline in all
sizes out front but often fix screens and have a super collection of
splines in the workroom. My local hardware store charges only $3 per
screen for labor. Can't chase materials for that price.

The smallest spline in McMaster-Carr is 1/8". Its ribbed to shrink a
bit. 1087A21, their catalog number, a whole $1.42 per 25 feet.

Joel ,
I think 1 gal. would do for a caravel , particularly if you were to add 1.5 oz.
water per qt. as it says on the tech info on zolotoneaim . website . At least on
the first coat . The can says do not thin - doesnt mention using water . The
website says if neccesary use it - course I didnt find that out first . HVLP might
make less mist and overspray - but I just have a regular gun .
To spray with conventional equipment , use 55 - 60 psi to cover 1st coat then
back of pressure to 15 psi and get back 2 ft and spatter for 2nd coat .
I did not thin as the can said , and did not get good coverage on the first
coat . I think maybe an epoxy primer might have helped , as its kind of creamy
colored and closer to the cameo white I used . My old finish was kind of yucky
biege and much darker than the cameo white .
Its really tough stuff , the overspray comes of hard , even with thinner . I
am glad I used it , just wish I didnt have to get more . I have seen many roller
latex and oil jobs peel right off so I wasnt going to use that even tho it would
be lots less $ .
I had all the cabinets out - will be redoing them as well , at least some
bulkheads . It would be lots of masking otherwise , and I dont think you could
keep overspray off every little thing .
    Chris

Hello,
I can open a valve on my 68 and fill the freshwater holding tank while I
am hooked up to city water. But if I am hooked to city water the pump
will not work and draw from the holding tank. There is not a valve that
shuts the water off from the holding tank but there is a drain between
the tank and pump that has to be closed as well.
Not much help but just a comment!

In order to pump water "from" the tank you must first put water "into"
the tank. I am not aware of anything that would allow you to be hooked
up to a city water supply and be able to fill the fresh water tank from
inside the trailer.

I believe you will have to use a water hose and from outside the
trailer, open the fill cap "to" the fresh water tank and then begin
filling up the tank that way. I am not aware of any in-line valves for
you to switch this way or that way to fill your tank up.

Find the fill cap on the trailer exterior, open the cap, put the hose
into the filler neck and begin to fill the fresh water holding tank. Do
not reconnect to the city water supply if you want to use the fresh
water holding tank. Once the tank has some water in it you can go
inside the trailer and open a faucet; you should be hearing the water
pump running then. And hopefully you will not have any leaks in any
lines from the fresh water holding tank to all the faucets and toilet.

There are valves underneath the trailers to empty the fresh water
holding tanks - these valves may even be in the "trunk" area at the rear
of the trailer, I'm not personally familiar with your model. But ALL
these trailers have valves, usually household outside spigot valves that
open and close the same was as a spigot on the side of a house. Look
for them, you will find them I am sure.

Anyone have any thoughts about replacing or rebuilding older valve body so
that the sink and bath drains will exit under the slide as it does in the
bronze casting . One comes from one side - one from the other. Sort of tee
shaped unlike any modern plastic fitting I have seen . I want to replace
with a modern waste valve that I can get parts for when it goes . Or
rebuild the old but parts are unobtainium .
some one must have done something restoring this nasty but neccesary item
.

Subject: Re: [VAL] Fresh Water Tank

Hi list,

I'm going to butt in here and make a few statements. Right after the shore
water enters the trailer, there are likely two valves that might be
recognized. One is a pressure valve and the other is a backflow valve.
These may be combined into one valve. Up front with the potable water tank
is a backflow valve. The back flow valves work on pressure, not a manual
handle.

These valves can be damaged or inoperative. Especially if the potable water
tank were not used for many years. My '69 Safari had an ungodly number of
valves up front to dump the potable water tank and water lines. Same thing
in the rear. If you are dealing with lots of valves, label them as you find
out what they control.

Potable water should flow through the pump, through a backflow preventer,
and then into the water system. The backflow at the shore line prevents
water from exiting the fitting. With the shoreline connected and the pump
off, the water enters the system and is prevented from flowing back through
the pump and into the potable water tank by the other back flow valve.

A simple system and effective. It would be a disaster if you could fill the
potable water tank from the shore connection unless the plumbing system were
modified with manual shut offs.

If you attempt to pump water from the potable tank and the pump drain or
tank drain lines are open, there wouldn't be enough pressure to open the
backflow valve. Also, if the pump isn't really putting out pressurized
water, there might not be enough pressure to open the valve. Be sure the
pump is really working at specification. The pump could run great, but
flapper valves or ball valves might not be operative - sort of sucking wind.
Most likely, you need a new pump.

Hope this helps,

                                                 '69 Safari, Joy

    Gerald,

Thanks for the Mc Master-Carr lead. That said, I just measured the
stuff and it's already 1/8". I'll take a sample of it to a local screen
shop and throw myself on their mercy.

    Thanks again,

    Glyn

Run this program to look for SPYs lurking on your computer including Trojans -
you will be surprised what you find! These Trojan programs are capable of
getting information out of your computer and you wouldn't even know it when it
was happening.
