The dump valve on my '60 was replaced a couple of decades ago, but if
memory serves me we had to turn it before pulling it out.

Heyall!
I traveled 2.5 hours yesterday to follow a lead on a 66 Ambassador which
didn't pan out but will share with the group.
It was towed to Flagstaff, AZ to be purchased and the buyer refused it so the
tow yard impounded it and put it up for sale. I met the guy at the yard and
the 1st Thing outa his mouth was " I DONT GET WHAT YOU GUYS SEE IN THESE
THINGS"!!!
Well, after composing myself I set him straight!
It's a pretty rough unit with no glass and a few plexi replacements.
It's only redeeming value is that it's a center FULL set up!
The skin is good and it still has all the orig. implements.
Anyone who might wanna think about saving it from the wrath of a fool can
contact me for PICS and more info!

Subject: RE: [VAL]Renovated unit/storing

We are finishing our unit finally. I posted photos at
http://www.airstreamphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php/cat/500/ppuser/642

I hope they are accessible to anyone who remembers all my questions and
tribulations. We redid everything...all systems and cabinets and I am
finishing the cushions and curtains now.

We won't even be able to use it much due to selling our house so quickly
and finding a 40' sailboat we like so it looks like now we will be
storing it. We have $8000 in just equipment to do this job and not
counting labor and sweat. I don't think I could get any significant
money back so I guess we will store it for about 5 years and try to use
it when we finish sailing.

I need advice on what I need to do to store it long term. My sister can
check on it but I know I should do something to the systems besides put
antifreeze in the water system. I suppose I should take out the
battery...it is new and maybe I can sell it to someone around No Fla or
south Ga. I will be leaving it in Jacksonville Fla where my sister is
storing our other stuff but this A/S will probably be in an RV place
since I don't think I can get it into her backyard. I know this thing is
gonna mildew so I will remove the fabrics and store them elsewhere.

Please write me with any help at lexxy@xxxxxxxxxx.net. So many folks have
helped me along the way...I really appreciate this list. At least if we
keep it we won't be homeless when we return in about 5 years [if our
health holds out and we don't stay in Tahiti].

If anyone knows of someone just dying for our trailer I would sell it
at a fair price...but I did get attached to it emotionally as I'm sure
you all understand. It still needs new wheels and an A/C but the new
circuit wiring is all there and ready...I just wasn't going to put more
into it to store it. The range, vent fan, pump, converter, wiring,
outside hookup in the skin and 30amp cord, pex plumbing, floor, inside
walls and cabinets, toilet [Sealand],hardware, fans, 5 windows, all
window and door seals, high quality foam cushions, lined curtains are
all new. The bath was removed and completely refinished. The koa wood
[from Maui] veneered table is removable from the floor also.

Lexxy in GA for now...soon to be the open sea!!!

Subject: [VAL] Window/Screen Question

Hello All,

I'm replacing a window on my '56 Caravanner that had a piece of plex in it,
and would like to know if anyone has the specifications for the glass. Can
someone tell me the thickness, and if it is tempered in some way? I'm also
doing the screens, and I can't seem to find an installation wheel that's
small enough to crease the screen into the perimeter groove. If anyone can
offer a solution, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Brian Jenkins

    Brian,

I too need to replace the screen in my front window and bought the tool
to roll the spline into the slot and it may be what you're looking for too.
I have in my hand the very tool I bought at Builders Emporium. It's made by
the Phifer Wire Products company, called a Screen Installation Tool
Di-it-yourself. It's in a blue and white package. The part number shown
beneath the bar code reads: 047888098750. I did go to their web site,
alas, only to find that they don't even list it but what I did find is an
instruction page for installing screen that shows their tool in use. You
can see it at http://www.phifer.com/rescreen.htm.

Here's hoping that this helps. By the way, I bought the wrong size
spline when I got the new screen material and will be going out today to get
the right stuff. It looks like the slot in the aluminum around my window is
smack-dab on 1/8", the exact the thickness of the wheels on the installation
tool. One tool has a concave slot in it's circumference and the other is
convex. The referenced instructions above explain it all. I can't wait to
do it now, thanks.

Glyn,

Buy extra screening. If that wheel slips and hits the screen - well, you
might say some bad words. ;)

Bon Voyage to Lexy and company - and I got to say, as a Louisiana
native, the best thing you could do for the Airstream is to drive it to
Az or Nevada and store it there then fly home. I hate to think about 5
yrs in Florida storage!!

    Tom,

By incredible coincidence I bought waaay more screen than I needed.
Your cautionary note will insure that I over bought though.

I'm out the door right now to get the proper sized spline.

    Thanks,

Actually just as I wrote the message a deal fell into our laps...the new
house owners are gonna store it for us and watch it for mildew
too...these are folks who already have the house in back of ours and
with our property they will have 9 acres now so they have the space and
we go to the same church...God just sent them to buy our house at over
the appraised value even before it was listed and now with luck and the
fact they are even keeping the old loveable cat too, I figure some
divine guidance is going on!!!

They have a bigger tow vehicle than ours and tow their horses and I told
them I would give them all the info and info on this list and let them
learn to use it....better than sitting in damp old FLA!!! We agreed to
a written agreement in trade for some furniture I was trying to
sell...what a deal. I feel like I won the lottery. Now I just have to
make 2 more curtains and 6 more cushions and it will be spiffy!!! I'm
pretty tired of mowing 4 acres!!!

We are flying to Dallas to see a boat in 2 weeks and could be sailing by
summer...dreams do come true if you work at it for 31 years!!!
Thanks Joann

Lexxy...still in GA for today...moving the first load out on Friday!

I thought our 1969 Int'l Ambassador doesn't have separate screens except for
the overhead vents which do have frames. Sorry, I don't know where you will
get screens. You idea for Velcro works on boats so it should work on
Airstreams, too.

Lexxy, I think Home Depot will have the aluminum extrusions to make
replacement screen frames. You will need to miter the corners and it goes
together with "L" shaped angles that slide into the corners to hold
everything together.

Cheyanne -

Measure your door and check out the accordion doors at Home Depot and Lowes.

They have many types that will fit.

OR you can go to camper World, or another dealer and Pay RV prices.

Thanks!!! I am headed for Home Depot for a shower door! Isn't it
amazing how much a markup there is on RV specific stuff when it is
basically the same thing?

Thanks again, Cheyanne

Ruth ,
On my 63 , and I assume on your 61 , on the other end of the handle your
pulling on is a very nice bronze casting , which has a slide in it and a
rubber gasket which has most likely dried out and stuck to the slide . Does it
hold water ? Few do by now , and as near as I know , replacement gasket kits
are no longer available . There was aguy on the list who was going to
fabricate some , evidently was in the rubber biziness , but I havent heard any
more about it .
I would think this would be a major topic of discussion here , because of
the way the drains for the sink come together under the slide in this bronze
casting - it is imposible to duplicate with any abs or pvc fittings I have
seen , without making a plumbers nightmare that hangs below the belly pan . I
am thinking the way for me to go is a holding tank for the kitchen sink grey
water with aseperarate 1.5 inch slide valve . I like having all the waste
water come out of the same exit , but havent figured a way to make it work
with modern fittings . This is on of my next projects , as I am about to spray
new paint inside and lay new linoleum , after that comes the holding tank .
Anyone had success rebuilding th old bronze dump valve - or good Ideas
about plumbing design with modern fittings on early 60s models ? Those of you
with original valves - how do you keep them operational ? Mine leaked like a
peach basket .
