I plan on doing some repair work to the skin of the Airstream. Is is best
to get the olympic rivets with whashers or without and use vulkem?

Took a little digging and computing.

Douglas fir weighs 0.017 pounds / cubic inch, aluminum 0.097 pounds /
cubic inch. So for a given area aluminum 0.144 inch thick weighs the
same as 3/4 plywood.

The bending strength of a beam is proportional to the height cubed and
the ultimate fiber strength. For ordinary wood that ultimate fiber
strength is taken as 1200 psi, though really good truss lumber gets up
to 2600 psi, and LVL sometimes greater. Aluminum runs 20,000 to 60,000
psi depending on alloy and heat treatment plus aging. Taking typical
values of 1200 psi for wood and 30,000 psi for aluminum, 3/4 plywood has
a relative strength value (height cubed time fiber strength) of 506,
0.144 aluminum has a value of 90. Based on this computation it would
take aluminum 0.256" thick to have the same stiffness as 3/4 plywood.
And that aluminum floor would weigh 1.95 times the plywood floor.

That's where the composites come in. Spacing metal skins (the stress is
greatest at the skins even in solid bars) makes better use of the metal.
Its more complex to compute and I'm lazy, but I'm guessing that a pair
of 1/32" skins spaced 3/4" by balsa, foam, or honeycomb would be stiffer
than the 3/4" wood floor and significantly lighter. But those thin skins
would dimple easily.

Let tell a tale about aircraft designers that I heard once. A friend of
mine went directly from college to McDonald aircraft. He was an
electrical engineer, like me. He told me once about a ladder and work
platform designed by an aircraft structural engineer. It was light and
easily moved about the shop, but the first time two workmen climbed on
it, it collapsed. He'd only designed for one...

We know that 3/4 plywood spans 2' in floors of houses with quite a bit
of tolerance for poor uniformity and hollows in the plywood. We can
compute aluminum to a tighter tolerance because its much more uniform,
but still it can be overloaded if we don't allow for two people being in
the same span and those two people having gained a bit over time.

I have to replace the T handle and lock on the trunk door and refrigerator

possible to order today? Is there a good replacement?

Look at www.mcmaster.com. Look at their catalog number 1210A81 or
80625A54 (black finish).

Or look for locking T handles in a RV catalog (such as the Byerly one
I've quoted from before) with and adjustable latch or zinc cam. Or at
cam locks. Might not be a perfect visual match, but should fit and work
well.

Bill - get the ones without washers and use Vulkem instead. The washer just
get in the way.

The Pramac line appears to be Italian - from the Pramac website. This is a
world-wide company.

I've been informed that Honda makes two types of engines - the better choice
is RED in color and the "basic economy" Honda line is now the BLACK painted
engines. I own three of the RED Honda GX series engines and have never had a
moments trouble out of any of them.

For me, I'd stick with the RED painted Honda engines rather than going with
their "economy" Black engines.
