I saw the mention of relocating a battery in a 1967 Safari.
Could you elaborate on what you did to do that? Was it simply a matter of running some
appropriately heavy lines from the existing rear compartment to the front of the trailer,
or did you reroute the new lines directly to the control panel? I'm contemplating doing
the same to eliminate the chances repeat frame separation.
Thanks,

Jo Ann,
I'll take a couple of pics, measure the distance and send it to you off
list. As for the "roll over".........I bought it like that, the previous
owner bought it like that also, so I have no idea when, where or how it
happened. I did find some papers inside indicating that it had been to
Mexico City and the Yucatan at some point in it's life so you never know. It
could have a great story behind those "beauty marks". Basically, the whole
curb side is pretty scrapped up along with assorted large and small dents
all over. It even has frame separation where the tongue meets the body. It
really is a write off even from a "die hard" restorers standpoint. Don't
worry, It'll all go to good use.

Am I looking in vain for a filter for the central vacuum system in my 1978
Excella 31' Airstream? It was a part number 915-01, according to my Service
Manual. The internet turns up nothing after numerous searches. Is it made
any more? And if not, does anyone know of a car aircleaner which has proven
a match? It is a cylindrical paper filter, much like a car's.

Hi Dr. G. J.,

Thanks for the suggestion that a 45degree down might be more appropriate for
the Dexter start angle. Also, there was discussion of a parking brake
option. I'm ordering the axle today with these changes from my original
specification.

I'll try to keep the list informed about what I consider to be almost a
drop-in replacement for the Henchen axle.

I kept the 10% increase in axle weight since this single axle is very close
to max personal gear. A couple hundred pounds of additional capacity means
a lot. Still not very pleased with the single axle vs the tandem as in my
'74 Argosy. The tandem arrangement handles road imperfections, etc. by
smoothing them out when bridged by the length of the tandem. I understand
you concern about the possible stiffer ride, but . . . Though it used to
be taboo, Inland RV's rep recommended this increase for Henchen axles.

I ordered the shock bracket that drops straight down from the torsion arm
and will have to make some modifications to the existing shock mount
positions to accommodate this change.

To other would-be axle replacements with Dexter, it seems that this axle is
a winner economically as compared to the Henchen.

                                                                Regards, '69

Hi All,

I know it's early in the year but part of the fun in camping is the build up and planning.
So this summer the family and I would like to go south to Virginia or North Carolina for a
week or so. Looking for wooded, shaded, kid friendly, pet friendly, nice clean and cheap.
Would be fun to do hiking and site seeing. If they have a web site please list them.
Thank you in advance.

Marc - check out your local home center, and look at the replacement filters
for
the ShopVac or Genie brand shop vacs...

btw, i just bought a ShopVac 'Hang Up' - a compact shopvac with a plastic
wall-mount fixture that also holds the attachments; an 18' hose, and a 3.5
(peak) hp motor... it's brilliant... would make a perfect trailer central
vacuum system, taking up very little room in a closet.... around $50.

Subject: Re: [VAL] Dexter Axle/hitch angle

I've checked my sheet found under the bed upstairs. I stick with the 45
initial drop angle, that way the extreme of trailing arm position never
gets up to 0 to run the tire into the wheel well. And that geometry does
increase the axle load rating.

Tandem equalized axles always ride easier (witness the WW2 German
command cars with tandem axles at the rear for the benefit of their
generals), but cost more to build. Double everything from axles to tires
to lug nuts. These days its hard to acquire a light weight suspension to
divvy the load between the two axles, and in the case of something like
the Caravel, the wheel wells for tandem axles would take up the space
presently occupied by furnace and refrigerator on the right side making
them hard to include while still having some counter space. The counter
space in the Caravel isn't huge already. Then for a given trailer load,
while the tandem axle arrangement does bridge road surface changes and
average them out (at least with an equalizer, I'm not so sure with the
independence of the Airstream axles where a block under one lifts the
other wheel on the same side clear of the ground), tandem axles means
twice the mass of unsuspended parts, e.g. tires, wheels, and axles which
makes the suspension system less effective. Adding unsuspended weight
does not make an improvement in ride under dynamic conditions.

Then when turning, the tandem axles have to drag the tires sideways and
some tires can't take that for long. And my visual tire pressure check
is made much less sensitive by the back up tires of the tandem axles.

Digging into my notes it looks like its Monroe that has the bracket kits
for adding shocks to the Dexter axles. I still haven't seen the kit and
I've not tried very hard.

Hi Colin,
Keep me in mind if you have extra pieces. You mentioned that the curbside is
all scraped up, is there an aluminum louvered cover on the outside of the
fridge? My reefer is running hot and a vent would certainly help. Thanks.

Hi again Dr. G.J.,

Got a call from Dexter and was informed that the parking brake isn't
available for the 45 degree down angle. I opted out of the parking brake.
However, for those interested, the 32 degree down angle will accommodate the
parking brake if the down angle will give the clearance necessary for
purpose.

Thanks for your help,

Does your year trailer have a plug-type door to access from the outside, the
backside of the refrigerator?

If it does I will tell you how I cooled mine.
