Tire skids were an aftermarket add-on, sold by trailer dealers and not a factory option.

Aftermarket add on such as tire skids are, as any consumer from fishermen to ametuer
photographers knows, are the province of armchair engineers. It sounds good to as many
as it sounds silly.

In my tragic instance they truly saved me from a roll over. Tire wheel and all came off
on a curve at 40mph, due to lug bolt failure. Even from that scenario, to get under way
again all it took was to press in new lug bolts into the brake drum ( correct rating this
time as the PO had put in some under rated bolts!) No damage to brake assembly occured.
They never hit the ground. The drag of about 25 yards was easy to control, despite my shock,
surprise and abject horror. But as a Sideshow performer I am pretty good at keeping a cool
head--

Would I buy them now, even after all that? That depends-- as who sells them anyway? I doubt
they're illegal. They probably just didn't sell well enough to continue to be manufactured
as I sure haven't seen them new anywhere. Who Knows? Do they void anybody's warrenty?? That's
your decision maker as far as I can see--

I have a cheesy advertising circular circa 1966 for them around here somewhere, which was in
my papers that came with my rig. I was very lucky to get so many documents. I'll scan and
email it to anyone who asks, but ask soon as the weather in the midwest is holding until
Sunday. I am hitting the road Friday night for Port O' Call's last winter. I am guessing
that sending the list an attachment is poor ettiquet, so ask and I'll send-

I got the old black water tank out of my 71 Safari yesterday. It wasn't
nearly as bad a job as I had feared. The old tank is way beyond repair
and I'm trying to get a new one now. This tank was made by El Monte
Plastics (EMP, 38-H-15, IAMPO, T-1410). I called them and they are still
checking to see if they have the data to build a new tank. Inca Plastics
will also make one if I can supply a drawing. I believe that Ronco
Plastics will also make one, but I haven't checked with them yet.
I'm going to make an Autocad drawing of the tank. I believe that someone
on the list is collecting CAD drawings for the older Airstreams. My
trailer is a 1971 L23D2 type. If you need this drawing, just let me
know.

Also a note about cat heaters:
They are generally not vented and discharge into the cabin. This is
safe because no carbon monoxide is produced. However, they produce water
vapor as a by product of the burn process. This water will collect in
the cabin. Personally, I don't like this. I'm still fighting with my old
Suburban furnace and just about ready to replace this cranky old beast
with a new furnace.

Jo Ann,
Axle skids on Airstreams as delivered varied by the axle manufacture,
model of axle and year. There were at least 3 manufacturers I know of.

On the 1950's HADCO hydraulic brake axle, there were skids:

http://vintageairstream.com/floyd/brakes/brakes.html
(mid page)

Yet the axle on the Bubble there wasn't:
http://vintageairstream.com/archives1/%2757BubbleOI-1100dfs.jpg

Body mounted skids started appearing on single axle trailers with the
Dura-Torque axle in 1961 - but not all. Doesn't show up in the option
lists, yet many of the installs I've seen are original - including the
ones on our '65. They appear in the owners manual in the side view. As
for their effectivity - as Fred Coldwell noted - I believe in them after
out axle broke. Once the tire folded up in to the wheelwell, the skid
took the weight of the trailer - otherwise it may have tumbled the wheel
out of the wheelwell - causing further damage.

You can discern the body skids in the first picture on this page:
http://vintageairstream.com/myrtle_tour_b4.html

Best of luck,
RJ

Jo Ann,
I just purchased a 63 Tradewind which I will be parting out at some point
(body is badly marred from a roll over). It has a Duratorque axle along with
the "skids". The skids are U bolted to the axle. I would imagine it was done
this way to avoid adding any heat to the axle during installation.

Hi All:

Note that the skid that RJ is referring to is chassis mounted near between
the wheel and the back bumper. An acceptable location as far as I'm
concerned. A final word from me on this subject (a welcome prospect to many
I'm sure) is to consider this:
If it is generally accepted that it is not advisable to place a jack under
the Dura-Torque axle, rather under the frame proximate to the wheel, why
would it be acceptable to place an even greater load on the axle in the same
location? Kind of a "Shock and Awe" situation. Apply a substantial shock
load and say, "Awe, my axle is bent....".

Happy New Year to you all,

I also have a '71 Safari and so far my tank is pretty much ok as far as I
know.

What do you suppose happened to your tank? What do you mean exactly 'way
beyond repair'?

What was involved in removing your old tank? ie. What did you have to
disassemble?

I'd appreciate any replacment info you come up with.

Thanks.

    All,

I was just viewing a short film produced by BMW that included a quick
shot of a 30 footish Airstream and a few interiors of it too. Two actors,
Clive Owen and Mickey Rorke are filmed in it. You get to see some views
looking forward and aft with the head in the background, kinda fun.

To get it and seven other short films directed by some of the best of
todays talent, like John Woo, Ang Lee, Guy Rithcie, John Frankenheimer,
etc., got to
http://usa.bmwfilms.com/clap.asp?template=index&country=usa&film=&start=Y
and click on the DVD in the lower right corner.

Of course, any of you who already own a BMW have one of these sent to
you by BMW for free. Anyone else has to pay a $3.75 handling and shipping
fee to get one. The particular film that has the Airstream in it is called
"The Follow" directed by Wong Kar-Wai.

I'm sure many of you already know about this excellent DVD and can
answer this question. What size and year Airstream is used in "The Follow"?

Subject: [VAL] Re: VAL Digest V1 #113 - More skids?

Usually when a tire goes flat it does not blow into smithereens just from
losing air. Going to shreds is most likely caused by the rim running on a
flat tire.
If the rim is held up so it doesn't grind the tire on the road, the tire
is likely to hold together.
A fire might go out without using an extinguisher but if I used an
extinguisher I likely would say, "Whew! I'm so glad I had an
extinguisher!" not "Probably didn't really need that - shoulda saved my
money!"
Same for the skids. You might get away with several flats with no damage
but if skids save my house from damage or destruction just once I would
think that the extra for buying the skids and carrying them around all
those miles was worth it.
Skids will also save a tire that is going flat more slowly than a
blowout. When the sparks are seen in the mirror it's time to stop. (I'm
sure they make sparks when in contact with the pavement.)
Skids are not a substitute for proper tire care. They will not last long
if used several times. 70 mph of grinding on the road will wear a skid
thru pretty fast.
Al G.
>
> I doubt that these skids will reduce damage to the aluminum from a
blown tire as I think that this damage would be from the tire parts
hitting the trailer and I don't see how skids would change that. While
some people swear that the skids saved their trailer, others have
experienced blow outs on single axle trailers without the skids and the
trailer still behaved admirably. So I would surmize that the skids are
more a personal preference item. What seems most prudent to me is to be
sure that your tires are rated to carry the load, that they are properly
inflated and that they are no more than 5 to 7 years old without any
signs of dry rot. Also be sure to check them at each stop. A hand on each
tire will tell you quickly if one is getting hot.

I've been out of pocket for nearly a year do to the death of my Dad, taking

my computer crashed during the interim and I lost most of my files. Does

Has anyone ordered replacement axles from Dexter for Airstream, and is the

Hello Colin,
First and most of all congratulations on acquiring the 63 Tradewind, I
had a 61 Tradewind. Nice trailer, but I couldn't pass up the 68 and the
driveway only holds 2 Airstreams at a time!.
I figured out what I had done when I removed the cover and the skin
around it. On the fan shroud there were two pop riveted pieces of metal
that had a hole in each. When I remove the panel I had to bend those
metal pieces straight to get the skin over the fan. I did a good job of
not bending them that they looked like they were originally that way. A
couple of nights ago I was pondering the problem and bent them back and
Ta Da the cover fit. I need to work on my short-long term memory!
Enjoy the 63 and thanks for looking for me.

City and Manitou Springs have something for everyone! Quaint shops,
hiking trails and lots of unique opportunities for exploring at 7,000
feet where the nights are refreshingly cool. We'll gather at Garden of
the Gods RV Park near the south entry and awesome beauty of Garden of
the Gods Park.

Friday night brings us together for a "Chili Dump" supper where everyone
pours their favorite chili fixin's into the community cauldron for a
multi-leguminous experience. Full of beans, we'll start Saturday with a
Continental Divide breakfast and visiting. After lunch, the curious
will be able to inspect our trailers at the VAC Open House. We'll cap
off the afternoon with our ever-popular social hour then we'll share a
catered dinner.

The fun continues on Saturday night as VAC Archive Historian Fred
Coldwell expands on Airstream trailer evolution from the 1940s to
1960s. The remaining days are set aside for exploration of the local
attractions and just hanging out. Day trips offer you the choice of
visiting the Pikes Peak via the Cog Railway, the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame,
U.S. Olympic Training Center or many other attractions. Tuesday night
is the last escape, as we all return to reality on Wednesday.

I case you all did not know, I put airstream sighting videos on my website
when ever I catch them on tape.

Unfortuneatly I missed the target one.

But you can check out what I have. You'll need the Real One player and
probably DSL since I made this at a higher quailty.

Enjoy.
