Since you have had a history of needing to relieve pressure on the lock
strike to get the lock to operate, it suggests that the door doesn't fit
quite right. Excessive force on the internal lock parts could easily cause
failure. You will need to remove the lock and take it apart and see what is
defective. Maybe beef it up and then adjust the fit of the door?
