Sherry,

Does the car battery charge with the trailer unplugged?  It just might be that
the alternator in the car has died.  With the battery disconnected, the
brake/running lights should still work, however.  If the alternator is not
putting out then the car battery is taking the full load of vehicle and
trailer, but it won't take it very far.
