[VAC] refinishing existing veneer

What are some good materials for refinishing the
existing veneer?  My wood is sound, but the finish is
obviously gone in some places.  I don't think
stripping should be necessary.  But, a new coat of
something is in order.  

Some time ago, someone posted info on a particular
brand of finish.  Unfortunately, I couldn't find it
locally.  Ideally, I would like something that can be
wiped on with a cloth, but which is permanent (like
the gel polyurethanes).  

Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated.
