Don,
  When the main flame is on, is the thermocouple still in the pilot 
flame? If it cools off, the main burner will shut down.

You can answer your question about the high-temperature cutoff by 
answering this: when the burner cuts off, can you relight it right away? 
Or do you have to wait until things cool down?
