I also recommend oxalic acid, sold as Wood Bleach in crystal form at paint
stores.

I restore old bicycles and my second step after getting all the grease and
gunk off is to take every rusty screw, nut, bolt, wheel, spoke, etc. and
soak them in the oxalic acid mixture to about an hour (10 minutes would
probably do it) to get the rust off. Depending on the initial condition, the
oxalic acid might leave a white powdery residue.
