[VAC] 12V Refrigerator Questions

I finally got around to trying to re-attach the control knob to the Dometic 
RM100 fridge in my '77 Sovereign. The previous owner used vice grips :-)

To my surprise, I saw that it had both a 120V AND a 12V Electric setting, 
along with the Gas option.

I know that 12V operation isnt the greatest, as far as keeping things cool, 
but, assuming the 12V option works, I have a couple of questions about it....

When hooked up to my truck, and not on shore power, is my truck powering 
it, or is it strictly running off of the batteries?

How long will it run on two batteries?

The end of the rod that the control knob is attached to is really chewed 
up, from the aforementioned vice grips. Do they still sell replacement 
parts (he asks without much hope :-)?

I dont plan to do a lot of Boondocking, but the 12V option sounds ideal to 
use while pulling the trailer. Beats having to shut the fridge down and 
re-lighting it every time I get gas.
