[VAC] Re: Flooring

Hi Sherry

Some cork floor products have a vinyl overlay or wear layer on top of the
cork. In my opinion this layer of plastic defeats the attraction of a
natural material.

Cork flooring is available in individual tiles (usually about 1 foot square
or 1 foot x 2 feet) or in floating floor panels (usually about 9" x 4 ' )

The tiles range from 1/8" to 1/2" thick and are available unfinished or
prefinished. Unfinished cork can be waxed or finished with polyurethane.

The floating panels are thicker and heavier but do not require a perfectly
smooth subfloor.

Locally the Legislature Library (Provincial Government Building) has a waxed
cork floor that has been in use since 1905. The marble threshold at the
doorway is extremely worn but the cork is fine.
