I have seen this before on '59 and older trailers.
I believe, but am not 100% sure that this plug is used for 12V power while
bookdocking. It would connect to an additional plug on your tow vehicle to allow
12V light usage in your trailer. Your trailer most likely did not have a battery
originally. This plug allowed the tow vehicles' battery to be used
instead.
