[VAC] 72 Safari/ single axel vs. tandem axel

Basic questions.
Is there any advantages and disadvantages to either single vs. tandem axel on 
a 23' Safari.  I understand that the single is 4800GVWR and the Tandem is 
5800GVW.
The additional weight for a single is only 1340lbs while the additional 
allowable total weight is 2000LBS for a tandem.
Any other differences?
