I've come up with a simpler version:

1% grade:   Overdrive transmission should be shifted out of overdrive

3%          Suburban no longer able to maintain 95 MPH while towing 31'
                 Airstream uphill

5%          Suburban begins to slow down to speed limit

10%        Suburban doing some serious work - Big Mac starts to slide off
seat

12%        Transmission reaching maximum operating temperature

15%        Suburban has to downshift into second gear
                           ...unless it's a 454,  in which case it can't go
95 MPH anymore.

16%        Calculator (or slide rule) used to figure out degrees and radians
of slopes slides off seat.

17%        Wife says "Why can't you ever stop and ask directions ???"

18%        Transmission bursts into flames

20%        Dodge Cummins pick-up starts to slow down

25%        Chunks of pavement start tearing out and flying backward under
Suburban wheels.

30%        You've just made Wally Byam proud!
