The lead was primarily as an antiknock mechanism.  The older engines with 
high compression will tend to pound them selves to pieces with the 
"regular" gas of today...Tetraethyl lead is highly toxic (white suit kind 
of toxic) and not something you would want to add to the gasoline 
yourself....Valve metallurgy changed down through the years and someone who 
followed it closely will have to step up and tell us when the various 
alloys were introduced to prevent erosion etc...
