[VAC] Re: How much is too much?

Gerald,

I'm guessing you mean a set of spring bars for up to a 10,000-lb
trailer? That would mean bars rated for around 1200 to 1500 pounds
tongue weight.

My local hitch dealer recommended against using leveler bars that were
rated much higher than the actual tongue weight. He told me that you
need the spring in the bars to absorb shock, and bars that are too stiff
can put a lot of stress on both the tow vehicle and the trailer.

I had a '65 Caravel with 1000-lb bars, and the ride was very stiff and
jerky. I think this also threw the front end of my Rodeo out of line
when I hit some big bumps a little too fast, causing some hard jolts to
the frame. After I got a used set of 500-lb bars, the ride and control
were both very much improved.

I believe Reese also advises to use the lowest rating that's above your
actual tongue weight. I seem to remember seeing PDF files of setup
instructions posted on their site (or they may have been "fax on
demand", but I somehow got them electronically). Your local trailer
(horse, utility, not RV) shop can probably give you some good advice on
this subject.
