[VAC] Re: How much is too much?

Warren,

Although you have already had several great answers to your question, I
wanted to throw in some of my experience with my '67 Caravel. Most of the
miles I've put on the Caravel have been being towed behind a 1 Ton Dually
ramp truck. It's a truck I have to haul my old cars around plus I can tow my
Airstream behind it at the same time (car shows, drag races, etc.). The
truck is obviously overkill for the Caravel, yet I have pulled it across
several states BOTH with and without the equalizer/distribution bars. I can
tell you even on a heavy duty vehicle such as my truck that it makes
tremendous difference. The best way I can describe it is the difference
between "pulling a rolling trailer" and "dragging a cumbersome feeling heavy
load".
Although you can get different brands for varying prices, I bought my
EZ-LIFT adjustable hitch, weight distribution bars and a single friction
sway bar control about 2 years ago on sale at JC WHITNEY for about 199.00. I
normally take measurements and of the ball height before hooking up and
after. I adjust the bars so the vehicle is at the height it was before
hooking up, with the bars parallel to the pavement and the hitch ball at the
recommended height of 18" (19" for larger '67 trailers). With this setup the
trailer pulls perfectly!

I will say that when I have towed my Caravel behind my Airstream Bvan just a
few times that I didn't use the bars, but my Bvan springs have been replaced
(at Jackson Center) and are very heavy duty!

Thanks, Geven
