Bob - this is what you're looking for - this stuff's bullet-proof.
Automobile-restorers coat frames and stuff with it. It even reacts with
rust, and makes an incredibly hard coating:

another process is called 'powder-coating', but it's a kind of 'baked-on'
process... i think POR-15 is what you're after...
