Jim,
The first character indicates that it is a Landyacht (O or L, I if 
International Landyacht); second and third characters give the length, 24' in 
your case; forth character indicates last digit of year, 8 for '68; fifth 
character indicates factory location, the 5 you mention must be an S for 
California (J indicates Ohio);  the remaining characters are the sequential 
serial number.

This code is good on '67 and '68 models.
