Boy.. All I had to do is ask...check out page 94 of the Jade Mountain 
Catalog... ( you can download section 3) at http://jademountain.com/download.html
and there are a number of answers to the problem.... Single pin bayonet 
base.. #DC5991    $29.00 each.... description says 6 bright led's , 
perfect for replacing broken room lights in boats, trailers,  & 
RV's.... bumping and jaring dosen't hurt them.... (or so it says)...

I think I will wait for your experiments, but certainly looks like this 
is very do-able...
