Hi Christian,
Try purchasing your very own copy of "RV Repair &
Maintenance Manual" by Bob Livingston. It has a very good section on
testing thermocouples. It's not A/S specific, but has a lot of applicable
stuff. It's been recommended by others, but I bought the book and I also
recommended it.
Since the thermocouple generates a small electric current
that allows the main LP to flow into the furnace (not to mention the pilot LP),
the test tool is called a "Magnet assembly thermocouple tester". Guess
it's like a small solenoid that is activated when the thermocouple is
heated. When the thermocouple cools enough for the current to stop, the
solenoid releases. Bet you didn't know that the thermocouple was a small
fused dissimilar metal that produces an electric current when heated? If
you look at the threaded end of the thermocouple, you'll see that it's an
electrical connection. This is why it's critical to only tighten the
fitting 1/4 turn past finger tight!
I have an old regulator from my water heater and I'll try
to remove the magnet assembly to make a tester. If it works, I'll post the
result.
Livingston discusses all aspects of furnace operation,
repair, and maintenance.
