The originals were sprayed fiberglass.   UV, sun, snow & rain erode and
delaminated the fiberglass until it becomes coarse and brittle, the
primary cause of failure.  You can see an exterior shot of an original
on this '58 Flying Cloud.  It had that same rough yellowish texture to
it, but is in good condition.

Making a new one from a fiberglass lay-up, using one from C&G (anyone
know where Rod gets them from?), or the other options discussed recently
will work.   I've seen some of the white replacement domes, and they
look pretty good.  Can't tell you where they were purchased, maybe
someone can speak up who likes theirs.
