An alternative would be to use a non-toxic stripper
and a high pressure sprayer - let the stripper sit,
spray off, and repeat.  Bob's right - might be likely
that an acid etcher was used, which could have
tremendous effects on the "clad" portion of the
aluminum - (read: it might be gone) which would mean
that all that's left is the alloy aluminum - which
will polish, but not quite as bright as the pure
aluminum clad... on the other hand, you might want to
ask yourself why it has been painted?  you may find
some body filler under there.  it's a heck of a lot
cheaper in the short run to do cheap bodywork than
replace alclad.  

just some thoughts from the balmy north.
