You'll probably find that such a mod will be more trouble than it's
worth, both in adapting, modifying and getting it to work. It has the
potential to look pretty odd, too.  Sometimes it's best to not  reinvent
the wheel.   

The rooftop A/C down-vent units have been around a long time and install
relatively easy, and can removed at a later date and the vent
reinstalled - something that can't be done with the furnace location.
