Dave, the Le Deau closures can be problematic.  Mine , broke in the same
spot.  The aluminum shaft is crimped to the hinge.  The hinge is made of
steel, so the disimilar metal problem causes some welding conflict.  I
found a welder that welded the shaft to the hinge.   As an option, you
can remove the steel hinges and put on aluminum hinges.  It might
require some machining to put a nut on the shaft, or to weld the
aluminum shaft to a new alumnum hinge.   Scott Scheurermann replaced his
Le Deau closures with another type closure, and it works well,
......maybe he will chime in and give us the scoop.
