Charles,
 What the technician is recommending is a kludge to prevent the UniVolt
from overcharging the battery. Put your DVM on the battery terminals if
you want to know what's going on.

If you were to unplug the UniVolt and forget that small light, you'd
soon run the battery FLAT, and there's no quicker way to ruin it.
