Polly,
 Personally, I'd always want a battery connected, just to help out with
the voltage regulation. However, if yours still works, I guess you can't
be going too far wrong. :-)

BTW: you are absolutely correct in wanting your battery secured. Spilled
acid makes a mess of things, and a shorted-out battery can ruin your
entire day. (not to mention your AirStream!)
