Actually, you snip horizontally on both sides of the button, parallel to the 
holes used to sew it o the fabric...the result is a thin, rectangular "bead" 
that you fit into the track.  The buttons, of course have to be thin enough 
so that after they are narrowed, they can move freely in the track.  But most 
garden variety buttons fit that description.
