Dear Conrad and Tricia,
Carbon monoxide is produced by a faulty anything that burns fuel. Your
fireplace makes it. If there's not enough air flow it's a problem.  Most of
us don't have anything tight enough to be affected- including A/S's.  I
don't know the particulars and I'm sure someone on this list can give us the
skinny on Carbon Monxide. I just know how to treat it and what the symtoms
are- and I've seen people affected by it.
