Re: [VAC] Tandem vs. single axle

Hi Jim,

To your question about our '67 Safari. No, it is single axle.

A comparison of the carrying capacity of tires on our single
axle '67 Safari and on our single axle '63 Flying Cloud has the
Safari just below the limits and the Flying Cloud way below
the limits. By that I mean, no more weighty items should be
put into the Safari and a many more weighty items can be put
into the Flying Cloud before the carrying capacity limit of
the tires will be reached.

That's just one factor. A more significant feature (in my
estimation) is the frame's strength. I'd rather have the frame
carrying the weight with ease than with undue stress. In that
way, if I inadvertently hit a stretch of bad road, the frame
will manage it without reaching its stress limits.

My goal with each of our rigs (trailers and tow vehicles) is
for them to perform superbly and not ever be unduely stressed.
My hope is by doing that, they'll last another 25 years and
still be going strong. And, my maintenance schedule will be
at the "maintaining" level, rather than at the "reconstruction"
level.

Time will tell,

Terry
