Re: [VAC] caulking

Caulking Secrets:

*Cut the Vulkem tube to an 1/8th" diagonal opening.
*Push the tube spout along the seam as you apply the gun pressure, this
will prevent pullups and gaps. This should be all you have to do with
skin lap seams and fillet beads.
*If you have a wide seam to fill, then apply the sealant in multiple
passes and use a popsicle stick to create a smooth bead.
*A thin sliver of a gap can be filled by pressing the sealant in with
the popsicle stick and then wiping down with the lacquer thinner, unless
you have a clearcoat finish. On clearcoat you are stuck with a one shot
application or use masking tape - the lacquer dulls the clearcoat.
* If you have a shaky hand, you can always use masking tape and the
popsicle stick to get a clean bead.
*I always seal after the final polish.
*Insert a long course thread screw into the tip when done and apply a
little pressure. Next time you go to use the sealant, pull out the
screw and the dried sealant plug will come with it.
*The vulkem has better adhesion & applies better than silicones - plus
it has a gray asphalty look that looks appropriate on vintage
Airstream's. Seems to last well, too.
