[VAC] Belly skins

Roy,
The skins on the 60's trailers, and I would think the 50's as well, lap
under the bottom trim belt. The side skins overlap the formed edge of
the outboard belly skins, and then the belt trim is applied to cover the
lap seam. To remove the belly skins just drill out the rivets in the
lower belt trim, drill out the rivets a little ways up the side skin to
free the belly skin, and then remove the remaining belly rivets. It
helps to remove the center belly skins too, as they went on last over
the outboard skins.

I would avoid cutting any of the skins at all costs. Due to the belly
aluminum's flimsy nature, it would take a riveted doubler all along the
cut to stitch it back together - probably more work than freeing up the
whole skin in the first place. Plus repairs look just that - repairs.

If access is needed in just one area, I would remove enough rivets on
adjoining panels to free up the one panel you need. They are rather
flexible, albeit awkward.

A tip to gain easier access to the belly. When working on the back,
lower the tongue jack. Raise it when working the front half. In the
middle you're 50-50.

I wish you well, the belly skins are a great place to practice pop
riveting - both Olympic (side skins) and hollow rivets (belly).

I sent this along to the VAC list because of its general interest nature
- hope you don't mind

Good luck,
RJ
