Gus, thanks again for your suggestions, i'll start work on re-wooling with
the aluminum ones. in looking through the past digests, i found a formula that
calls for 5 parts lacquer thinner and one part olive oil as a cleaner. do you
think this would work or do you have another specific suggestion? with the
understanding that i would like to polish afterwords. or would this give me a
good enough finish that i could just leave it as is?

Tom, thanks for the information regarding access to back issues of the
Digest. i just spent over two hours brousing through them all and printing those
tid-bits that i would want for future reference.

And regarding the parts i'm still looking for; anyone have any successes with
finding the small inside worm gears for the HEHR window crank systems?

best regards always, jim

Hi,
I wanted to introduce ourselves. We are Ed and Amy Craddock and are new
owners of a 1964 171/2 ft Silver Streak Sabre. We bought it a couple of
months ago, quickly repaired a few of the major systems, and then
immediately took it on a three-week, 6,000-mile, 15-state road trip
with our two little boys! I've never traveled with any sort of motor
home or trailer before and found that the lifestyle suits me very well.
We had a fabulous time and we all really love the trailer!

When we bought it, the exterior was in pretty good shape, but the
interior needed and still needs lots of work. The man we bought it from
never used it and had no idea what worked and didn't. We've been
delighted to find that the after-market air conditioner does work. We
live in Arizona so thats very important to have while we're doing the
repairs this summer! The sofa/bed was falling apart, so we've rebuilt
that. We've got the propane systems working; the range on the original
stove works, but not the oven. We got the refrigerator working for the
trip and that was the most important thing. The toilet now works, but
there's a problem with the black water tank, so we can't use it. We've
got the shower up and running now too. I still need to do lots of
cosmetic work inside -- refinishing the wood cabinets, painting the
walls, and reupholstering the seat cushions. Its really fun for us to
do this and its been really exciting to see this old gem spring back to
life with a little bit of love.

I'm very glad to have found this group and I think it will be a wealth
of information. I've been reading a lot of the messages with interest
and will almost certainly have questions.

I saw the suggestion to clean water spots with the lacquer
thinner/olive oil combo and tried it. It was a great thing to do.
Although the annodized surface was free from any major damage or dents,
it had 40 years of wear making it look somewhat dull and simple
cleaning didn't help. I used this mixture on the whole trailer (and
buffed it out thoroughly with a soft cotton cloth to get rid of the
oily feel). With a little elbow grease I was able to get most of the
water and tar spots, and, of course, 6000 miles worth of dead bugs off
the trailer. It looks so amazing now, and just really perked up the
finish. I can't stop admiring it! Thank you for the recommendation!
This is all I plan to do with the exterior -- it looks so good now. The
only problem is, now that its so shiny, I can see more of the dings and
small dents!

Someday, when I figure out how, I will share some pictures!

Amy

Welcome Ed and Amy, Glad you had success with the mixture. I did not. I
have been working on one spot next to the spot that had a decal and no
success on coming close to that original finish. Maybe it is the brand of
thinner I used???

Have fun with the trailer.

Welcome Amy,

Glad to have another SS owner aboard. There aren't all that many out
there. :o) I've recently acquired a 67 Silver Streak Safari, 20'
and do really love it. So far, it's living in the back yard, but I
go and sit in it when I want quiet time. It was in really excellent
shape considering it's age, but does
have one soft spot in the bathroom floor by the toilet. Will need to
get busy and fix that. It's still
original, with only minor additions. Hoping to either use it, or at
least get it towed to a great parking space so I can go there and watch
the river go by, have my dogs with me and just enjoy.

Hello,
My husband, "Boogie" and I own a 1977 Continental SilverStreak. We are interested
in becoming active on your list. We have only had our Streak for about 3 years.
It was previously owned by one family so we are the second owners. It is in great
shape for an old girl. We have enjoyed pulling it to various parks and getting the
reaction that it does.
Some people really admire and others look down their noses at it. We really enjoy
the room that it has.
We would love to get together with other owners. If there is a meet going on we would
like to be involved. We live in East Texas, close to Tyler.

Jim
If you are talking about anodized aluminum, then clean with Comet first and then l
acquer thinner and olive oil or kerosene (4 or 5 to 1). WD 40, which is mostly kerosene,
will work just as well. Either one will collect dust over time. If the finish is not
anodized, look up the polishing procedures on Tom's web site.
