I looked it over quickly at work. Can't wait to take some time to look more closely. Also can't wait to let my wife take a look at it. Yours was an "extreme" challenge compared to our new purchase. You have done an incredible job. I can't believe the difference between the before and the after. Looks like your family is having a fantastic time with it. I've never been to Wisconsin, but it looks cold. Great camping weather! I was glad to hear from you last week. It sounds like you are ahead of me. We're not quite ready to camp yet, except in the back yard. Like Marian, we don't even have anything to pull it with. We have a half ton Suburban, but am planning to step up to a three quarter ton Suburban. In the mean time, we have plenty of work to do. By the way, what did you pull yours with, and how did it pull? I haven't weighed our SS yet. I plan to have my dad hook on and pull it down to the co-op scale to see how much it weighs. After getting our SS home, one of the first things we did (after solving the shocking problem with the electricity) was to hook up to water so that we could begin cleaning it up. Luckily for us I guess, I left the water hooked up and turned on over night. We discovered a leak somewhere in the restroom. The flooring was wet, but not standing in water. I haven't had time to get to it, other than pulling back the carpet to dry. It appears to me that the plumbing may run across the floor in the back corner, hidden behind a false corner. That may be where the leak is coming from. If anyone has hints for me about how to get into this area, please let me know. For now, it appears to be my only leak. I am glad your trip to Yellowstone National Park was a great trip! Our plan it to have a vehicle set up for towing and the trailer ready to go by next summer. We plan to take a short Oklahoma trip before heading west. I called the couple we bought our SS from and in the conversation found that he had taken the original awning off of the trailer and stuck it back in his garage, minus the awning cloth which he had taken off and thrown away because it was rotten. He let me come pick up the pieces. I am not sure how to go about finding out if it is fixable. Does anyone have an idea of where to start? Thanks for all the information everyone. Any suggestions welcome. #3 If there's nothing wrong with the stainless tank, it can be used with a demand pump. Just splice the new demand pump into the water line that comes out of the bottom of the tank. There will have to be a vent established. The old air line from the compressor can be rerouted up well above the height of the filler pipe on the side of the trailer. Or, the air line connection to the top of the tank can be plugged and the rubber seal on the outside filler cap gapped to let air past it. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////// #2 If there's any way you can salvage the stainless tank I would do so. I've had both over time and too me the plastic tanks ALWAYS taste bad. You can use a pump with your tank. You might try to flush and drain it a few times to see if you can get rid of the rust. my 77 has a stainless tank under the bed. Unless the previous owners changed out the stainless to a plain steel tank yours should be stainless too. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// #1 "Glass lined" is a coating of porcelain enamel that is sprayed on the inside of the steel tank while it is heated orange-red. The powdered glass melts on the inside of the tank, providing a watertight coating. This is the same process as is used in water heaters. Unfortunately as the years go by tiny defects in the coating, especially around fittings, permit corrosion to get under the porcelain, causing rust. It's not as bad as in a water heater as only cold water is in the tank, and in most of our RVs the tank is empty most of the time. So instead of beginning to rust after 5 or so years like a water heater it is 20 or more years before significant rusting takes place. Once the tank begins rusting it will be only a few years until it rusts through in a spot. It can't be stopped by any practical means as the sealers that will work are not what you would want your drinking water exposed to. An anode rod as is used in water heaters would help, but I don't think these fresh water tanks have one. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jun 2004 13:35:06 -0700 From: Marian & Hounds <vistadel@xxxxxxxxxx.net> Subject: Re: [SilverStreak] New to list/plumbing-leak These aren't in order, but all I had found and saved from the sslist. For now, it appears to be my only > leak. ***************************************************** Check the hot water heater which is in the closet for leaks around the bottom as this is common on an older one unless it has been replaced. Check the toilet valve behind the toilet to see if it needs to be tightened and then check in the lavatory area for water under the drawers. The shower lines also connect in the wall behind the lavatory. Another culprit would be the sprayer that is attached on the wall behind the toilet. These will sometimes leak. Note that you should have a shut off valve on the floor near the back left for this line if it is at fault. ........................................................................ ........... If you can only hear water when you turn on your sink faucet under the floor, I would think you may have a leak under the faucet valve in the cabinet. If this is the case, that water would be spraying out all the time under the floor and more so when the faucet is off. You may want to see if the drain lines are ok. If there is a damaged line, it could be pouring in the underbelly. My sink drain line makes a turn under the back twin bed and slopes downward along the fresh water tank until it angles straight down through the floor into the gray water tank. 77 SS Luxury Liner *************************************************** You may be right about your plumbing running under the floor. If I remember correctly, the earlier Silver Streaks had heating duct work under the floor with vents in the middle of the walk way in the bedroom. It this it true for your trailer, the pipes were probably installed in the basement under the floor along the route of the heat duct vents. If this is the case, I would either pull the access panels off of the bottom to see the lines and repair or simply splice into the existing lines and run the new plastic piping above the flood in concealed areas. I had a 1970 Holiday Rambler at one time that this was the case. I was able to connect the front pipes that came from the basement area to the sink to the rear supply by feeding the newer tubing through the sub floor from the outside. It was easier than I thought it would be. If your leak is under the floor, this is about the only options I would know of. ************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jun 2004 16:51:49 -0700 From: "Carl Rodgers" <carlandjoann@xxxxxxxxxx.net> Subject: Re: [SilverStreak] welcome It might. have you tried just rubbing compound (automotive) the anodized aluminum is rock hard so an abrasive like rubbing compound shouldnt hurt it. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marian & Hounds" <vistadel@xxxxxxxxxx.net> To: <sslist@xxxxxxxxxx.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 30, 2004 10:29 AM Subject: Re: [SilverStreak] welcome > Carl, > > Would that work on streaks from water dripping off a tree branch? > It left dark spots/streaks. There's a company called Dri Wash 'N Guard that specializes in waterless car wash (believe it or not) that also has a premium metal polish. I won't say that it made the job easy, but after fighting the oxidation with Nuvite for over 40 hours (on the front end), I was able to knock out an entire side (except at the very top) in less than a day. There are some swirl marks and stuff that I'll work on with Nuvite, but this stuff rips the oxidation off way better than anything else I tried. If anyone is interested, just email me directly at: steve@thesl8s.com and I'll give you the details. Disclaimer: Dri Wash 'n Guard is a multi-level company and some folks are very sensitive to that based on bad experiences in the past. I just want to be up front with you. I joined in the party, but don't worry, I'm not going to try to recruit you. I fell in love with the polish and would be happy to let others know how to get ahold of it if interested. Thanks - and I do apologize if this commerical announcement offends anyone. That's not my intention!
