My wife and I introduced ourselves as new owners a week ago and have heard from one person. Maybe they are all out camping! Or maybe all of the activity really goes on in the question and answer threads. We're like you and haven't figured it all out yet. If you're out there and have any advise for how this system works, let us know. If you already own your SS and it is in good condition, you are already ahead of the game. You could just be looking and then find one that needs work. My wife and I just returned from a 2000 mile round trip to Tin Cup, Colorado. Having just recently bought a 1972 SS needing some work before we set off on a trip, we didn't take it to Colorado, but instead looked for Silver Streaks all along our trip. You can imagine we saw hundreds of RVs. Can you believe it, we did not see one Silver Streak (what we consider vintage that is). So now we know why some of the threads talk about the curiosity of other campers when they see our Silver Streaks. There just are not that many out there (at least not between Oklahoma and south central Colorado). I think you just have to decide what you really want. I am guessing our work on our trailer is going to be just like our work on our old house. Some things will nearly drive us crazyas we try to solve problems. Yes, the expense may seem high at times, but the trade-off is not just in having a quality trailer, it is in having one with its own personality, so to speak. I haven't yet had time to get involved with questions through the other part of this site, but it looks promising. I think there must be lots of people out there willing to give good advise, I just have to find time now to figure out which problem I want to tackle first. Good luck and we look forward to hearing your story as it develops. Got mine last year and it's really neat. Too bad that I still need to acquire a heavy van or suburban in order to tow it around myself. It's only 20' and in excellent condition. Fortunately I managed to get the history of it from the seller. Last two owners - one never used it and needed some cash, and the other used it for a year, about 4 times, and decided to get a larger one, so I got it. Orig. owners had it for all it's life until the last 4 years, it's a 1967. Originally planned to haul it to a nice place by the river here, and then park it and visit when time allowed with my mom and dogs. However, mom had a stroke, so plans are on hold. May wind up having to sell, but that would really be my last choice. I don't think there are all that many SS's out there these days, at least being hauled. Occasionally they come up on ebay, where I get most of my general info and/or history on the few that are shown for sale. Usually they are parked and lived in. There's one on ebay right now, but it's virtually 1/2 gutted and was pretty cheap, but needs Lots of repair and fixing. BTW, I live in So. Oregon and there are actually a few of them around locally, a handyman told me. I think that they are very nice, mine is ever so nicely made and (thank heavens) Everything Works! Only thing is the floor by the toilet, where the old water pump leaked and the water must have set for a long time, as the floor is soft there. However, I've saved a post by another trailer list's restoration guru, and he says it's pretty easy to fix, without replacing. Right up my alley, as I don't have repair skills. :o) Can't wait until I hear more from you guys, as maybe it'll give me the incentive to try and use mine after all. I really didn't buy it just to resell, but life hands you funny twists in the road sometimes. My 'big deal' is when life gets too much for me, I go out to the trailer and sit and read or fiddle around. Have to pretend that it's not outside my back door though! LOL Keep posting on your thoughts re:repair or sale, Celesti and Michael & Kim, please advise where you are planning to take yours and if you had fun. Not sure where you are located, but the other group has some camping planned, en masse, for the summer months. I can look up details if you're interested. Great to hear from other SilverStreak owners!!! marian On Jun 28, 2004, at 10:11 AM, Michael Young wrote: > Welcome Celesti to what I know is at least a group of three. My wife and I own a 1974 Continental Supreme 32' and it needed some work when we purchased a year ago. I can tell you that parts are difficult to locate if you want original items. We were fortunate in that the parts we needed came mostly from a member that was gutting out a trailer from the same era. As far as the water heater, ours was heavily encrusted with calcium, but it did work. So what I did was to drain it and remove the pressure relief valve. Then poured in 2 cups of C.L.R. (available from most hardware stores) then refitted the pressure relief valve and fired it up for an hour, let it sit for 2 hours and drained it. That cleared 99% of the build up. I can also say that there are many on the list that reply to the emails sent and are very helpful in solving problems. Many do travel through he summer and I would think that is why there has not been a lot of replies. I have been busy with repairs to our new abode as we have recently moved to Arizona, and have had little time to spare between work, and work at home (I need a vacation!). I will be happy to try to help with anything I can. I am not familiar with any of the models except ours but, have some practical experience that helps. I can say that these trailers are better built than what is available new. And the nostalgia is an experience all to itself. I'm Carl Rodgers and I have a 77 SS Supreme Rocket. We love our trailer and have pulled it all the way from Norther Idaho to Key West Fl, and your right, you see very few of them on the road. I think in all our traveling we've probably see less that a couple dozen SS and only one or two on the road. We were lucky enough to get ours from some elderly folks who had taken very good care of it. They were members of the now defunct Silver Streak club. Our trailer was dated inside so we did a little remodeling. You can see pics of our trailer on The Silverstreak web site. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to help. Unfortunately we just lost one of our most knowlegable SS people recently with the death of Bob Ashby in Conroe Texas. Bob lived and breathed SilverStreaks and had been associated with them for a long time. Good luck with your trailers, they are the best! Carl Rodgers ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 2004 21:12:56 -0400 From: Guskmg@xxxxxxxxxx.com Subject: [SilverStreak] Hi Michael and Cellesti Welcome to the SS List and congratulations on your new ownership. With a lot of help I have restored a 1983 Silver Streak 3411 Supreme. It was in perfect original condition when I traded a 1970 Streamline 23' Duchess for it in 1991. We owned the Streamline for 21 years. My first project was to install a propane powered Honda RV water cooled generator under the sink cabinet top shelf. In 1995 the trailer was in a huge hail storm in Fort Worth, Texas. One stone was large enough (basketball size) to dent three "pies" on the upper left corner. Fortunately, after considerable persuasion, I convinced my insurance carrier to fix the loss rather than totaling it. This was at the very end of the SS factory's operation and I was able to get all the original skin replacements. The next improvement was redecorating the inside. My wife and a friend, who was an interior decorator, did a beautiful job. Through the years, I have made a number of small, but challenging improvements. Satellite and conventional antennas, new cables and RF selector switches, AC/DC television with VCR, new microwave, closet clothes poles and shelves, porcelain commode and lavatory, new fluorescent light fixtures, refrigerator, water heater, heater and ducts, water pump, marine battery master switch, and an electronic constant voltage converter and a tongue jack. My latest endeavor has been to change out all the tires and re-machine all the original Western Mag wheels and add new shank nuts and center caps. I saved all the invoices so I could keep track of what, where, and when all the various items were acquired. Shocking when you look at it in total. However, if you want a fine Silver Steak it is worth the effort and the money. I am telling you all this to show there is no stopping to remodeling whether it be a house or trailer. You must decide how far and when to improve. Even if a new one were available it would cost way more than a remodel. Just think $80,000 plus for a new Airstream and it would have to wait a long time for vintage status. Good luck and enjoy your SS regardless of the condition.
