I believe that Jim Dupree on this list is a member however, and maybe he can answer you. I think we will be ok on for sale announcements unless they start to get out of hand. - -Tom - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Everett Bacon" <makinbacon1@xxxxxxxxxx.com> To: <sslist@xxxxxxxxxx.com> Sent: Sunday, October 05, 2003 10:10 PM Subject: Re: [SilverStreak] Connecting to the web on the road > Hi Tom, > > Do you have any contact information for the Houston SS Club? > > Also, would it be ok for list members to send a message to the list > announcing any SS's for sale? I know Ros just made this replacement, but need the source. I feel the cost of a full replacement is more cost effective than trying to find the older parts. It meets monthly at the Coushatte RV ranch between Belville and Sealy Tx. The next meeting is this weekend, Oct. 17-19. Prior commitments will prevent us from attending. Further information can be obtained from Bob Ashby, Club President at 936-539-1692. Bob, 87 years "young" is known as Mr. Silver Streak and is a wealth of information about Silver Streaks as he has restored over 100 of them and was associated with the factory for many years. Has anyone installed electrically activated hydraulic disc brakes on his SS? If anyone has, what has been your experience? Electric brakes are certainly better than no brakes, but they are subject to erratic locking, application delay, connection problems, sticking, etc. A friend has an Airstream with hydraulic brakes that are connected to the tow vehicle brakes. When he presses on the brake pedal the trailer brakes are applied immediately in synchronization to the tow vehicle brakes. A slave cylinder is connected to the tow vehicle brake circuit. This slave cylinder is attached to a master cylinder that is connected by flex hose to the trailer brake pipe. This simple system does not permit independent trailer brake application nor does it provide for adjustment of the proportion of brake force on the trailer according to the weight of the trailer. From what I have been able to learn, the electrically activated hydraulic trailer brake system does allow independent application of the trailer brakes as it is controlled by the same brake controller that is used with electric brakes. If instead of a delay-type brake controller a proportional controller like the old K-H ones that are tapped into the tow vehicle brake circuit is used, or the MasterBrake proportional controller, the trailer braking force is synchronized with the tow vehicle braking force. This sounds like a good idea. I want to know if it is in practice. I can replace the electric brake assemblies and drums for a few hundred dollars. The electrically controlled hydraulic disc brakes run over a thousand, so I would have to be convinced that they are worth the expense.
